6-6-19, Chesapeake Bay

Today, we fished w/ Capt. Dennis out of Solomon's. The crew was Ernie, Bob, Greg and Paul.

It was projected to be a beautiful day with manageable winds.

We got off a little late (Blame it on Ernie) but once on the boat, just after 7a, all was well!

The 1st stop on the milk run produced some fish, albeit small. But some doubles and a bonus toad! Paul caught the 1st fish but didn't want his picture taken.

This was the bridge we were fishing...

...nothing big hanging around though.

We then moved to spots B and C but no takers so time for a run.

Once we got to the hallowed grounds, it was game on. This was the quality of the fish we were catching, all on top water!

We were hammering them and it was chaos! Capt. Dennis would not let me take pictures because the action was fast and furious and it would shut down at some point.

In the mayhem, Greg got a hook (yes, a treble) in his finger...yes, he yelled in pain!

But, after a brief time out, he got back to fishing!

Like I said, there is a lack of pics because of our Capt.'s demand that we keep fishing.

I bet we caught close to 50 fish on top water. The biggest at 26-27" and very few that were not keeper size. It was outstanding dishing.

Ounce it shut down, we tried 4-5 other places and caught many dinks, only one was picture worthy but no pic.

We were near Pax River Navy Air base, where I spend some time at when I was in the Navy Air Reserves.

All of the sudden, as Greg was jigging, he hollers, "the hook fell out"! Sure enough, what was going to be a visit to the E-room was now a band aid fix! Never seen anything like that...

We called it a day around 2p and Bob got to take a bunch of fish home. I hope he had fun cleaning them....

We are estimating an 80-90 fish day, maybe more. The morning was incredible!!

That was the wildest half hour of fishing I have ever seen. Hungry rockfish fighting over your surface plug. If you were too slow getting the slack out of your line after your cast, they fought over it just sitting there. That's the fishing dreams are made of.
It took my tired old self over an hour to fillet those 8 fish, making sure there were no bones left in the fillets. They all went to a former work friends blind son and his blind wife. He loves rockfish. Lucky for him I prefer white perch. He ended up with exactly 10 lbs. of fillets, should last the two of them till the fall run.
