I got out very early and was greeted at the ramp by these friendly gals. They just watched me put my stuff in the boat and get ready to go.
The view from the ramp.
I was feeling positive about the day. Water level had dropped and clarity was good. A cold front had come through and it was nice with a steady breeze out of the Northwest.
I tried topwaters on the point, but nada. I made a run upriver and figured I would try another area at the head of an island. I was not able to get bit there, so I worked some roks and then stayed in the shade on the MD shoreline for a while. There were a few other boats out, so I waited to float the island on the VA side. I finally got a 14.25"er on a spinnerbait on the windy shoreline.
It was a while before I got another fish. I missed a couple, but the bite was slow. I put together a little match the hatch spinner jig with a plastic trailer made by Combat Jigs. It looked just like the small baitfish that were near the shore. It had pale blue on the bottom and green on the back. I caught a chunk fish that was maybe 12 inches.
I tried other baits, but the spinner was the only lure that got bit. The blade broke on that and I put the same trailer on a 1/8 oz. chatterbait without the skirt, I caught a catfish dragging it along the bottom. I also caught a tiny bass.
It was a while before I got another bite. I missed a couple bites with the chatterbait and a tube in one fishy spot. I cast close behind a blowdown and hooked a 16.75" smallie.
I was enjoying the day and would just anchor at certain spots to fish, retie or eat. I was out all day. I floated the next island, but the bites dried up. I would try the topwater from time to time. Toward the end of my float I was reeling back the little buzzbait to re-cast and a amallie about 17 inches or so blasted completely out of the water, missing the lure on the way up and back down. That was the end of the excitement and I was tired and called it a day. I was off the water about 3:45pm. It looked like the PM bite would have been better.

It's always that way. Should have been here yesterday or this morning or when the fish were biting......
I am starting to get a little concern about the lack of bites. It seems that if you hit 'em at a certain time, it's good. All other times, we are just lookin'!
Pretty day to be out though....

Time to try working the middle more. I did not do that, mostly due to the wind.
