We wanted to start early but the sun rose before I got there at 6:20a. John was already out on his boat....good decision.
The 1st spot we tried, close to the ramp, looked great but produced nothing. We mainly tried top water but threw a few other things a s well.
After talking to John, we went to the spot he was vacating but produced nothing. His report will indicate a pretty good bite there early.
So we decided to make the long run and we drifted the shore line eddies for quite a bit until this speckled kitty came on board!
Then we proceed to keep catching nothing. Very few bites.
Bob then switched to a white perch lure (might as well since the smallies were avoiding us).
He caught a nice long ear!
For the next 30 minutes or so, it was a long ear bite.
All were at least 8"! I was catching mine on a tube.
Bob caught 6 or so, I caught 4.
Then the bite did and so did my trolling motor.
The current was definitely screaming today as the river was starting to rise. We started at 4.2' (POR).
Since we wanted to get Bob on the road before 2pm (to miss WW Bridge traffic) we headed on down the river and saw John.
While he was chatting with us, he had a lure in the water and caught a nice smallie.
I could almost hear him say, "see, this is how it's done"!
Second trip in a row that we caught fish other than the target species!
Getting out has been tough with high water and life.....

I got on the water at 5:11am.
It was not light enough to run up river, so I tried a plopper, chatterbait and swimbait, but nothing bit. I ran to the tip of an island and started throwing the same baits. I caught a 15" smallie right at the tip of the island before drifting by.
I floated down part oif the island and lost a bigger fish that jumped and threw my swim bait. I decided to go back up to the tip of the island as I saw fish chasing bait. I anchored so I could cast in front of and across the point of the island. After a couple casts with a Storm subwart, a nice smallie blasted it right as I started to reel. It measured 18" and was chunky.
I switched betweem a swimbait and the subwart and caught 6 fish, making the total 7 on that one point. The fish were staged and chasing minnows up toward the shore.
Here is a second 15" fish and a hefty 16"er.
Ernie called before I caught the last fish there. The bite shut off as the sun came out, so I moved up river. The water was rising and getting muddier with some debris. I struggled to catch 3 small fish on a tube, a swimbait and one on a crankbait. After I ate lunch I decided to head back downriver to try and find clearer water. I struggled again, but caught the one when Ernie and Bob came by. I caught a total of 12 smallies. Nice day to be out and I was off the water by 2:40pm.

Good work John....early bird definitely got the worm. I was still asleep at 5:11. My excuse? My back needs sleep, especially after my 1st 20 mile bike ride yesterday!
Bob was ready to jump on John's boat after our smallie skunkaroo!

That can't catch targeted fish!

When you're served up lemons, make lemonade. Those long ears were a blessing and a blast. Besides, it was a great day to be fishing.

Nice job three of you
Good thing about catching those panfish was that it shows the health of the 'mac's coming back
