John and I met Craig at 7:30 (we got to sleep in) to get back after the peacocks....on the fly.
This time, we headed north where he knew some big guys lived. But.....the water was really dirty and there was no visibility which is important when you stalk these guys.
We then went back where we left off on Wednesday, passing again under the bridge we spent some time bonding a couple of days before....
Then John picked off two little ones on top water.
But Craig wanted real action so we headed south. We went down by Del Ray.
Pickings were slow. We had a few blowups here and there but no love. But we had some interesting sights!
Finally, I saw a fish near a bed and I wanted it. Craig said that it was an Oscar but I didn't care. I wanted him and after a few casts....I got him. Finally!
We hit a few places and the Craig called out, "let's try this canal". Man...I am glad we did!
We saw a few peacocks under a dock but we couldn't get them to come out and play. Then, one of them scooted out and went to be with his mate.
There was a clear casting area of maybe 2' X 3'. But, there was slop all around it, a sunken palm branch and overhanging tree limbs. Combat fishing at its best!!
John was up so he had to to make a side ways cast...maybe 35 of them. It was tough to land the fly properly...maybe every 5 casts it would get in the zone. And then, you only had 18" of fly presentment area. I got tired just watching but after many blow offs (literally, as the peacock would blow the fly away), John was able to piss her off enough to get a bite and it was game on. Great fight and big fish landed.
Now it was my turn to get the male...if he was willing. I made a few casts and got the fly hung up on a limb. No way to get it off without spooking the fish. So John hands me his rod (7 1/2 footer vs my 9 footer) and about a dozen casts later, big boy take the fly and it's game on. Really nice peacock! The adrenaline was pumping for sure....
Craig has some incredible shots that I will post later.
We were happy but wanted more so we moved down a bit and there are two more fatties guarding a bed. I was up first and a few casts later, I have my personal best (we didn't measure or weigh but this fish was a beast!)!
And was lit up!
After we released him, John stepped up and landed the female after a few casts.
Four big fish in short order....but after almost wearing ourselves out casting prior and during this flurry.
We stared heading back and made a few stops but in reality, we were done. Totally satisfied....now, on to mom's for some camarones enchilados.....which were really good!

It takes time and patience as only one can throw each time.....many years ago, I was fishing with Carlos down in Miami and he was making cast after cast but no takes. He slumped to take a break and I took a shot from the back of the boat and caught the fish! It just happened. Carlos looked at me and said, "really?"
Anyway, it's an amazing sense of accomplishment...the fly is no more than an inch or inch and a half long.
