I met up with John (his boat) at 0615 to try for smallies out of Algonkian. Curly and Paul were also going out on Curly's boat.
While it was a bit chilly at the start....
....once the sun started to peek out, it was perfect!
We started all the way up at Lansdowne but could not buy a bite so John asked me to reach in his cooler for this!
OK...now I know what's going on. So we continued to fish and John starts looking for one of his rods. It seems that it was missing and I didn't steal it. Somehow, it went into the drink...way upriver.
We continued to fish but both of us knew we had to go back and look for it. We started down from where he last remembers using it and about 200-300 yards later, there it is in the water! We retrieved it and high fives were given. With all the excitement, I forgot to take a picture but it's burned in our minds.
Another thing that's burned in our minds was the birding today. Lots of them capped off by this guy!
We continued to strain water with our lures and with a 1/4 of the trip left, I get slammed (jerk bait) with this channel cat.
Finally, the slunk is off.
Then we heard a hissing noise and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Motor? Seat cushion? Bad gas?
Nope....this guy!
I then tied on a very technical lure, the Ned Rig and this 13 incher obliged!
With a few minutes left in the game, John's grub got slammed and he had a nice smallie at the end of the line. I was getting ready to take an action picture and the fish came by the boat, looked at us and spit then hook. Disappointment abounds!
At the ramp, we ran into John F getting ready to do some yak fishing and JR was launching his jet boat. I hope they caught all of the fish that ignored us!
Anyway, the fishing was slow, the company was great and the day was spectacular!

It was like all the fish had left that area! Saw only a handful of fish swimming. Also, very little dormant grass left from last year. No structure to hardly be found = no fish .

Same thing we said....we saw a group of suckers, some pairs of channels and a few carp. I think we saw only 2-3 smallies and no BG's.
They are hiding from last week's cold.
I bet it will be a different story this week....waiting to see how JR did.

We fished an area I have NEVER been skunked and struck out. Fish were hooked closer to take out. Ernie - I found the cause of my motor sputtering and stalling. It was a crack in the fuel line near the engine connection. Snipped a bit off and re-clamped it. I should buy a new one this year.
Catfish tournament was strange too!

At this time of the year, with the temps still low in the morning & the photo period, 95% of the fish are in 5% of the water
Look for wintering area's and hump the holes hard

I think the bass were just...off...on Saturday. A friend took me to one of his favorite places in MD and the bass simply would not bite. We had perfect water conditions and beautiful cover but there was no activity, it was incredible. I caught one dink in the first 5 minutes but we never hooked another bass in the next 8 hours, just a few little pickerel. Not even the Ned was getting touched.
At least you guys got some nice pics though, I didn't even get that!

Very interesting that everyone is seeing a similar pattern. Seems like local ponds are tough too; not much activity (no beds that I have seen as of yesterday) and not many bites even when conditions look near perfect. I did manage one dink on a t-rigged rage craw the other evening so hopefully things will start picking up.
