We took a shot that today would be a decent day to do some C & R striper fishing and it turned out to be an incredible day....both the weather and the catching were stupendous!
Rob, Bobby Rae, Andrew and I met up with Capt. Dennis at Piney Point and while we didn't get to see the sun rise, we were greeted with flat calm water and no rain/mist even though it did that all the way down.
It did not take long to start marking fish but they did not want to play. However, Bobby Rae did take the skunk off quickly!
We picked off a few here and there in the river but it was tough going!
I always bring a goofy lure just for the heck of it and this 20 year old 6" curly tail didn't disappoint!
More catching!
Rob has this hat that I laugh at at times but it keeps him warm and today....made him king of the boat!
He had the hottest hand!
So we made a move and started to catch the a bit bigger and with more consistency!
Then we made another move.....a REALLY good move because we started to catch 'em big and plenty!
The method was to drop to the bottom and slowly work the jig....not quite dead stick. It was deadly!
These were FAT footballs, all in the mid 20's with some nearing 30"! At this point, Rob and I were tied with BIG fish at 29".
But then...I got hit and the fish started to peel line!
We actually had to chase it. I was sure it was a 35-40" fish!
But it wasn't....it was "just" a very plump 30'5 incher!
At this point, they were biting as evidenced by this punk who ate a lure almost as big as he was....
Bobby Rae now gets nailed and lands this 30" beauty!
Dad fights back with another football!
By now, we were whipped.
The accounting firm of Do, Allen & Rojas believe that this count was off by at least a dozen....
....but who cares. We did really well once we figured out how they wanted it.
My piano spoon got skunked today. It did not take me long to realize what they wanted.
As we rode back to the ramp over flat, calm waters....we were giddy. We had a blast. Lots of stories, lots of dancing when we had 3 fish on and lots of catching.
What a way to start the year!
After fishing, we went over to Chief's in Tall Timbers. Not a fancy place but outstanding food. Oysters three ways, on the half, Rockefeller and fried.
We were too hungry to take pictures.....

Ernie,
Glad you guys had a great day. But if someone would have told me last year that "Ernie had an enjoyable day fishing the Potomas IN JANUARY", I wouldn't have believed it. For a person who hates even the thought of cold weather, you sure do have a big smile on your face! Kidding aside...congrats.

The big smile is because it was not that cold. I can certainlay tolerate 50 degrees with 4 layers on. 👍

We did good because the good Capt. worked hard to get us there.
And interestingly, when we saw birds, the fish were lethargic. There was no real bird show. When we really got into them (they were hugging bottom) there were no birds around. When we saw one, we would try to make them leave.
Today was cancelled.

Interesting note- when we were on the way back to post, Bobby Rae was getting some hands on instruction at the helm. He declared that he saw a whale or big porpoise. No one else saw it but the possibility was there. Now we are hearing reports that a whale has been spotted between Smith Pt and Pt Lookout in recent days. We were just inside of that.
Maybe BR did see a whale....how cool is that!

Ernie, great write up and photos! I will include link for my video I just finished editing of the trip.
Also, yes I am positive that I saw either a small whale or porpoise. It was limited visibility through the boats soft top, but I am certain that with the calm water and clear conditions my eyes did not deceive me. Whatever it was submerged before I got everybody's attention. It was a large dark grey hump that rose and fell in a matter of 3 or 4 seconds.

That is the link for the video. Enjoy!

Love the vid! Great job, Bobby Rae!
Excellent report, as always, Ernie. It was great meeting the Allens and being able to reconnect on a trip with Capt. Dennis. Definitely makes up for our last trip!
Couldn't have asked for a better day on the water!

Awesome!! Nice video to capture the moments. That underwater shot of the double was pretty cool. So sad I had to miss out on this day.
