FlyFest is an event held each year at Chris Moe's house; he lives on a creek just inside the Patuxtent River. The event is mainly a fly fishing event (fly tying and casting lessons for a couple of hours) that includes morning and afternoon fishing with a break from noon until 2:30 for the festivities.
This year, I went on David Policansky's boat (Flying Fish) and we started out of Rockhold Creek in Deale which is about 40 miles up the bay from Chris' house. This was part of the scenery!
Our plan was to start down around 8 AM and fish whenever we saw possibilities. And did we ever see the possibilities!! We actually had to leave breaking fish to get to the event on time!
As soon as we came out of the creek, I hooked up with a nice 2 lb blue fish and took the skunk off the boat. David did the same a few minutes later!
After catching a few of these, we moved down bay when we say some birds working. I decided to throw some Specialized Baits metal (Li’l Bunker) and worked the bottom when I got hung up….on this guy!
That lure in his mouth is 3” long….this was a very nice blue!! I guess we caught about 20 blues (and 1 sub legal rockfish) as we motored down to the event. After some good eats and a casting lesson, we got back on the boat with an extra passenger. You see, the deal is if you don’t have a boat, you come to the event anyway and get on board someone’s boat. Allan was only able to fish with us for about an hour but he caught (on a fly) a keeper striper and a puppy drum….
….while we fished the Cedar Rips (which was slow today).
We then handed Allan off to another boat and we started our 40 mile trek back….but not before we received a tip that there were some nice fish holding deep near the Gas Docks. Of course, we had to make a stop!
I started catching keeper stripers (up to 22”) off the bottom and then David yelled out that he had a nice fish!
A very nice blue fish indeed! Then….he yelps again and brings in this nice Spanish mackerel which was 22”+ and a citation!
That was four species on fish (striper, Spanish mackerel, blue fish and puppy drum). Not bad at all. Now we really needed to get going because we did not want to be out at dark although we had a near full moon!
Obviously, we spent a ton of time riding instead of fishing but when we did get to fish, the action was outstanding with a very nice class of fish!
I can’t wait until next year! Maybe we can take an Ashburn crew?

Ernie, I see guys jigging on the sandbar at Solomons Island. What is the latest jig for stripers? I have not jigged for stripers since you and I did at three sisters twenty + years ago.

Carl,
We use the same "stuff" that we used to, just more modern.
Curly uses old and beat up curly tails at Fletcher's and has caught fish. The key there (at Fletcher's) is weight because of the current.
For the sandbar, you don't need as much weight so the following are good:
buck tails (white, chartreuse
metal (Hopkins type)
jig/plastic (Bass Assassin, BKD etc)
I will send you a care package on Monday with a few goodies that will include some BKD's.
