Reels in carry-on bags?

Flying up to Minnesota for a wedding this weekend and I might get to do a little fishing, so I'd like to bring a couple reels. Don't want to check luggage if I can avoid it, but I've heard conflicting reports about the TSA when it comes to reels and line in a carry-on.

Anyone had any issues with bringing reels in a carry-on bag?

Re: Reels in carry-on bags?

whoa....never thought of that as a problem, but I can't see how it would be a problem.  It doesn't seem to fit any of the danger requirements (liquids, tools, explosives, sharp objects, etc..).  It also happens to NOT be on the sporting goods list..... It's not a bat or hockey stick.  You're good to go sir!

Thanks. Yeah I checked the list and didn't see reels listed on there but I just wanted to be sure. I've heard some people have had to strip line off their reel...?

Depends on the TSA agent you get.

Re: Reels in carry-on bags?

I have flown with some to FL without an issue.  I had a reel carry case with a reel and some tackle.  No issue for me.

Re: Reels in carry-on bags?

I ALWAYS carry my reels on carry on and have never had an issue.

They did have a concern with some of my big striper lures when I flew up north......

Re: Reels in carry-on bags?

When I've read of line being an issue it was always on international flights. The line was confiscated and replacing it in that country was near impossible.

Had no problem bringing my reels on board, but unfortunately I didn't get to use them.

Just out of curiosity, how much was the fee for the rod tube?

Re: Reels in carry-on bags?

If it's frontier, they charge you for carry on and stowed baggage. Plus for a seat.

The cheap fare becomes very expensive....

i forget how much it was but it WAS frontier. I think they charged me whatever they usually charge for carry on's. they didn't consider it 'oversized' or anything.

i ended up just stuffing it into my luggage on the way back.

Re: Reels in carry-on bags?

Ah ok. I almost booked with Frontier but was put off by the $30 fee for a carry on bag.
