Headed up there today to check it out prior to taking my girlfriend on Sunday. It wasn't looking good as I neared the new White's Ferry park. Nothing coming from the smoke stacks.
I launched anyways. It's about 1.5 miles upstream to the outflow. I had the trolling motor on max almost the whole way and most of the time was only maxing out at about 2 mph when I assisted with the paddle. It took me about an hour to get there.
There was some ice in the river, mostly thin stuff on the VA side. In the middle there was nothing. Water temps were 32.8-34 on average. At the outflow it was 35ish. I wasn't expecting much but decided to give it a shot anyways with a kastmaster spoon.
To my surprise I eventually had a fish on. A sucker hooked above its mouth, probably snagged it. First time catching a sucker.
Then I snagged a small channel cat. OK, so there are some fish around. Then I got a 20" channel to actually bite. Ended it with another smaller channel cat and now I have some fish I can fry.
I'll have some pics later.
I won't be going back on Sunday.

They did make changes to the launch area as you can see in the photos. It was a lot easier this time.
It's a Golden Redhorse

WoW...considering how cold and clear that water is, but those Cat's fried up nicely....not sure what is done with the Sucker....? Are they "Cedar Plank" fish? Bake them on a Cedar Plank...throw away the fish and eat the plank?

Travis,
That launch area looks 100% better than when I fished there last year. However, if I remember how fast and shallow it was in that sector, it was still hard to fish there. What did you think?

Yeah the current rips through that area. You need to get about .5 mile up river for it to get deeper and slower. I'm glad I had a motor, I'd rather not paddle at 1mph ground speed for that far just to not get washed down river.
I think it would make a a good location to start a float.

There has been no warm water therebfor quite some time now. Maybe a degree or two difference. Hardly worth it.
