8-15-08 OBX fishing report

Joe Dowdy (Lynchburg, VA) and I met up this morning to do a little salt water fly fishing with Capt. Brian Horsely of Flat Out fishing. It was both our second time fishing with Brian.

The weather this morning was spectacular as it has been for most of the week. The only concern we had was that we had a full moon last night.

Anyway, we went back in the sound and fished points on the marsh islands. The bait was very abundant and we were having trouble getting anything to bite.

Finally Brian got a fat keeper flounder.

We moved to another spot and Joe picked up an undersized flounder.

We got word that there was a huge school of blue fish on a wreck right outside the inlet so we motored out but the school was gone. I cannot write what Brian said.....he was ticked.

So we went back in and fished a grass flat and I finally caught a speckled trout; we caught a few more keepers. I could have sworn I took pictures but they were not in my camera!

Then, one of the locals came over and told us that he had seen a school of red drum in a flat (2 feet of water) and Brian asked if we wanted to try to find them.....we said heck yes!!!

Well.....we looked and looked and never found them.....but it was worth the try.

It was a great day on the water despite of the slow fishing. For me, getting out with a pro like Brian is a huge benefit. Lots of learning going on. He even complemented me on my backcasting!

As we were heading in, we ran into a pod of porpoises, you can see their fins just above the water.

PS- As we were leaving, I snooped in the back of Brian's Suburban. I think I need a few more rods after looking at this!! I think I counted 29!!
