Algonkian 6/22

Got out early this morning and had the ramp to myself.  I ran upriver and noticed the fish were not chasing like the last couple days.  I tried a buzzbait for a bit and decided that was not what they wanted.  The water was a little more stained than yesterday and the level had dropped.  I fished from 6:00AM until 12:00PM.  I caught one 15+" on a spinnerbait near shore.  I later decided that was more placement than bait of choice.  I caught smallies on a grub and crankbaits.  Most were smaller, but I caught a skinny 18"er on a crappie crank (biggest SM so far this year).

I also hooked something big that pulled drag, pulled the boat and I could not get a hold of.  I got it turned, grabbing the braid with the pole when the drag just kept going.  I could not get it to come to the surface.  It was either a big carp or a really big catfish.  I finally pulled the rebel wee craw loose and noticed a small piece of flesh on the belly hook.

When I pulled the boat out and was getting everything stowed I saw a car heading for the ramp- from the river!

Re: Algonkian 6/22

figure this as as good a thread to ask on as any .... how long a float is it from Goose Creek to Algonkian on the yak at current flows?  Plan on fishing that stretch tomorrow at sunup.

Thanks.

Maybe 5 hours if you don't slow yourself down any.  Most likely flowing 1-1.5mph.

Re: Algonkian 6/22

I did it under the same conditions and there was some slow water. There are some riffles on the  VA side that were decent as well as what I call the "chute" which is river right...pretty fast but some nice edges. This is just below the huge island.

Re: Algonkian 6/22

Thanks fellas .... is VA or MD side better to target?  Penrod has some info but more of it is upstream of Edwards and i'm headed down.

Re: Algonkian 6/22

Work the creek good and stay middle to VA side until past Broad Run except the rocks on the MD side above there are good too.  Middle is good after that once the sun gets up.  Take the VA side after the big island (where Broad Run comes back in).  I think that will produce better right now.  There are some slow areas, so keep that in mind.
