Ottertail County Minnesota 5/25-6/6

Yesterday I got back from my annual vacation to Minnesota. I had a great time, and the weather couldn't have been better. I visited with family and did lots of fishing over the course of two weeks, which was terrific as always. My relatives aren't into fishing, so I went by myself the first week and with a friend the second week. Here are some pics, in no particular order.

Random smallmouth.

Nice smallie, on a tube I think.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/NorwayWalleye.jpg
Sight fished this 22" walleye with a Gulp leech on 4lb test.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/NorwayBass.jpg
Nice largemouth.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/snapper.jpg
I found this baby snapping turtle in the yard and released it by the lake.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/NorwayNorthern.jpg
I don't usually fish for pike, but they're impossible to avoid when bass fishing.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/Walleyestringer.jpg
I was able to catch walleyes every night by casting a jerkbait off the dock. Kept some for eating and released many more.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/Nightbass.jpg
Occasionally I'd pick up a nice bass doing the same thing.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/hookinthumb.jpg
This is what happens when you forget your headlamp and try to unhook a thrashing walleye in the dark. Right in the thumb.

Pretty smallie on a jerkbait. They loved it.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/NorwayCrappie.jpg
There was a huge school of crappies that hung out around the dock for over a week. I could catch them whenever I wanted. This one came from the boat though.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/usedplastics.jpg
We used a lot of plastics, so the boat deck required periodic cleaning.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/frogbass.jpg
The topwater bite turned on as the water warmed up. We caught a ton of bass on frogs.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/Loon2014.jpg
This loon circled the boat and entertained us for about an hour. He liked to watch us bring fish to the boat.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/pumpkinseed.jpg
Love the colors on a pumpkinseed.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/smalliefight.jpg
I had my phone in my hand when this smallmouth bit so I figured I'd snap a pic.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/FiskeBass.jpg
Good largemouth, think I caught it on a frog.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/Swimbaitbass.jpg
Swimbait bite is always good.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/bigcabinview.jpg
View from the big cabin where I stayed most of the time.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk271/BryanL857/Minnesota%202014/LakeCabin2014.jpg
This is the little cabin that my grandfather built in the 50s. We still use it though it is lacking in amenities. I caught lots of walleyes off that dock.

Pretty raw.

It was an awesome trip. I always hate to leave.

Just Wow!  Talk about quality fishing.  The land o lakes is apparently the place to be.  The rawness of your thumb really shows what a great time you had.  I'm totally jealous, but also smiling really big living through your report!  Thanks!

Was thinking the same....maybe Bryan needs someone to carry his stuff on his next trip. I volunteer!

It is paradise to me. No traffic, no crowds, no launch fees, no motor restrictions, countless lakes, crystal clear water, lots of fish, friendly people.

I drive up so I can bring all my gear, and I need a truck to pull the boat around anyway. It's a 22 hour drive, but totally worth it.

I'll let you know if I need a tackle caddy smile
