So I spent the weekend visiting some folks in Tappahannock, and was able to sneak out for some yak fishing on Saturday. I left at 4:30am and headed South, a little over an hour away.
So I launched and paddled out into the marsh, not really knowing where to start. After about an hour, I threw a redfish magic spinnerbait around some marsh islands and hooked up to a 21" redfish.
So from there I let the wind carry me out onto a flat and started throwing a topwater lure over the grass. I had a couple short strikes then hooked up with a 19" speckled trout.
I continued throwing the topwater for a couple of hours and had a few more rolls on the lure, but they wouldn't take it. It was windy enough that I could barely see my lure, which didn't help.
Pulled up onto a sandy beach for lunch. There is clear water and lots of life in this spot. It was sheltered from the wind and I could see minnows and crabs everywhere.
So after another hour or two of fruitless casting, I finally hooked up with another slot puppy drum on the redfish magic, and another much smaller one a few casts later.
I switched to a jerk shad on a weighted hook and almost immediately hooked up with another nice red which gave me a great fight on my lighter spinning gear.
After that fish I decided to call it a day, since I had enough to make dinner for the people I had abandoned that morning .
So I tossed the jerkshad out and started trolling back. Just as I'm getting back to the launch, the rod doubles over and I pull in a 21" speckled trout out of the grass. A great finish!
I was really happy with this spot, and I will definitely be back, hopefully on a calmer day!
Just for the record, I also did some fishing off the dock back in Tappahannock. Tiny croakers and small blue cats were abundant.

It's a blast. I think if the water was calm I could have really done well with topwaters.
Maybe we can hook up and do some fishing out there sometime.

Way to go - the web filter at work is blocking the pics (will have to check from home) but sounds like a great solo trip!

You are only 20 minutes from my house down there. Nice thing about speckled trout fisherman is they do not burn great spots. I know that place well.
You did better than most have in the past couple of weeks...
BRAVO.

This place is about 5 minutes from nowhere! I had to stop and ask a possum for directions

I was on the Western Shore, somewhere between Hampton and Deltaville. I'd rather not be too specific on here (local spec fishermen would put a bounty on my head) but I can tell you via email if you want.

Got it. I didn't want you to be too specific either. See email.
