7-27-13, Lander to POR

A group of 7 from the Potomac River Anglers Club met up at POR at 0645 to set off to Lander.

As we set up, John showed us his 2 piece yak.

We were all on the water by 0730.

We all scattered but it did not take long for me to hear Chris say "fish on".....

This is how he recounted his day: "Enjoyed the trip this morning. Found a bunch of fish in the coves on the Md side. After a while thought most of you were ahead of me so made some effort to get downstream and then suddenly saw the bridge in front me just before 10am. Tried to milk that last stretch out, but found that last bit of water fairly unproductive, so was out of the water around 10:30am. Thanks for the trip and special thanks to Ernie for leading and getting me and my boat up to Landers. I landed 18 smallmouth and 3 sunfish, but only one smallmouth was over 12 inches and not by much. Lots of FUN!"

I know that Jamie had 20+ smallies both on spinning and on the fly.

Bruce landed a 20" catfish on an UL rigged up with 4lb line. He needed net assistance form Michael.

Michale caught quite a few fish and i was close by for this one.

The reason I was close by is because he watched my go over the side when I got caught up in I a little back flow while feeling a tap as I fished over my right shoulder. The kayak turned and next thing I know is that I am about to go in so I did. Rather than fighting it and risking loosing my gear, I just slipped into the water. The yak stayed put and other than taking on some water, everything stayed on the boat.

It was a refreshing dip and Michael stayed with me until I was able to get back on.

It all happened in a nano second!

Terry caught many fish but he said most were small.

I caught 7-8 smallies with the biggest close to 15".

However, I was using larger hooks and had many, many hits. Smaller fish no doubt. I had 2 fish strip my bait off the hook and has 2 tails get bitten off my paddle tail swimmer. Al my fish were caught on a weighted hook using the smaller Zoom paddle swimmer in white.

Randy scored a 17 & 18 incher and I may have some pics of those coming later. Those came on top water.

John got a nice 18 incher on the flay rod....very nice for sure. That picture will be up soon.

We had agreed to take out at 12:30. The weather was perfect and the wind just started to blow in the last hour or so. By 1:30 we were eating BBQ at Kernels BBQ on Rt. 15. VERY good!

Great day indeed!

Sounds like a fun day, with a lot of fish caught. I forgot all about this trip. I fished a long day yesterday and slept till the dog insisted I get up.

That 2 piece kayak is appropriately named "Tequila".  I am betting the guy who invented it had drunk lots of tequila before coming up with that idea!!

Looks like you all had a great day.  Nice fish all around.
