Riding the Tour de Cure to help Stop Diabetes on June 2nd

I am riding 56 miles in this year's Tour de Cure to help Stop Diabetes.

I will join thousands of riders from across the country in this effort to raise money to further the mission of the American Diabetes Association: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all those affected by diabetes.

By making a donation on my behalf, you will be helping the American Diabetes Association change the future of diabetes by providing community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure. Last year, I rode just after my knee replacement and was able to raise over $1500!

I know my participation in this year's Tour de Cure can and will make a difference. Please help me reach my goal of $1500 by supporting me with a donation.

You can follow the link below to my personal webpage to make a secure, 100% tax-deductible, online donation.

Thank You!!

I've hit my goal....but it's not about me. It's about those affected by diabetes and those who sent donations. Thanks to you!!

I think I will raise the goal a bit since I still have 48 days before Tour day. BTW, I am slowly building my miles (did 26 yesterday) so that I can be sure to finish the 56 miles on June 2!

Not yet....long way to go still. I did 38 last year.....now have to put some work in to build up. I just hope the bionic knees hold up!

I guess the trick is to pedal out 28 miles so you'll have to finish to get home. You'll be ready for Hobie season when the hot weather gets here.

Mileage update: I am up to 31 miles on the bike. I will work up to about 45 by the last week of May and then rest the legs for the 56.4 miler on June 2.

Fundraising update: I have been fortunate to surpass my goal 3 different times so I raised it to $2000. So far, folks have donated $1556! big_smile

Re: Riding the Tour de Cure to help Stop Diabetes on June 2nd

So we are 17 days from ride day.....    cool and I have been getting ready the best I can.

The fundraising has gone very well....the new target of $2000 has been surpassed. I may need to change it again.... big_smile Many thanks to everyone who has donated. What I have been surprised by is how many friends are affected by this disease in one form or another.

The riding has gone well but finding 2-3 hour chunks of time is difficult. Plus the threat of PM T-storms are always prevalent. Last Saturday, I did a 40 miler while riding solo. The weather looked ominous but I only got sprinkled on. Today I got a 28 miler in at lunch time (got rained on) but that is only 1/2 the distance that I need!

The big advantage of a group ride is the ability to draft. I will need to find some horses to get behind to eat up some miles. But you have to reciprocate and lead the pack once in a while. Frequent stops (every 15-20 miles) for refueling (PBJ sammies, Gatorade) will be critical.

Wave if you see me on the road.....

And now, I get to rest until the ride on Sunday.

I was able to get a 50 miler in on Wednesday...that's 3 hours and 30 minutes on the saddle!! Everything went well and I hydrated properly. The knees screamed a bit towards the end but all is well.

THANKS to the generous folks who have donated.....$2100 so far!!

It is done!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/New%20Kiko/IMAG0507_zps7ec524f8.jpg

Team Red raised over $52,000....

Team Ernie raised $2100....

Great ride....57.78 miles in 3:59:10 for an average of 14.4 mph. I will take that any time. Carlos was a horse!

Thankfully, there were many fueling stations along the way.

One of the coolest things that happened was running into my baseball team mate from Gonzaga HS, Joe Spriggs. Last time I saw him was the baseball season of our sophomore year in HS (1968). That was 45 years ago. We both said we haven't changed a bit!

It was perfect, I never felt the heat (I think it was in mid 80s)....we left at 7:00 and were back by 11:30.....it was breezy. Plus we made 4 stops to replenish liquids and eat PBJ sammies.

Those knees look like they're screaming in that pic. But they held up! Way to go mister!
