7-5-08, Wicomico & Potomac River report

Today marked the end of a three day, four trip fishing frenzy! I met up with John Campo at 5:50 AM in Tyson’s Corner and then met up with Dan Lord in La Plata at 6:45 AM. We were going to the Wicomico for a day of white perch fishing.

We stopped at the customary Chaptico Deli to get a breakfast sandwich, some bread pudding and some ice. By 7:45 we were on the water but it was raining and the wind was picking up. Not a good sign for shallow water white perch fishing when the trolling motor is on the back of the boat! Up goes the bimini top!

So...to plan B we go!  We motored up 4-5 miles to St. Margaret's Island and started trolling some light tackle (rattletrap and jigs). On our 1st pass....BAM...Fish On and Dan lands a nice 19 incher which promptly goes in the box! He hit a rattle trap.

On the 2nd pass....BAM....another hit and another 19 incher gets boated. He hits a 1/2 jig with a curly tail.

We made a few more passes and nothing but we kept at it and were rewarded with an almost 21 incher! But we frogot to take a picture!

When the rain stopped, we took the bimini down and tried casting for them but after 30 minutes of that, we got nada so back to the troll and we proceeded to nab a 15 incher...back in the water he goes. By this time, there were two other boats fishing the same area so we took a 5-6 mile ride up to Swan Point to find white perch. Only problem....an extremely low tide.

We worked at them for almost two hours and caught a total of 26 (16 for me, 9 for John and 1 for Dan).

Those are low white perch numbers! Out of those, maybe 5 were keepers but John did manage to land an 11.5 incher which was very nice. We were using 4 lb test and little grubs on 1/8 oz jigs.

We called it a day at 12:45 and we ran back to the Wicomico where we made one more stop....to eat crab cakes at Quades Store. As always, there were immense and incredibly delicious. We talked to Mrs. Quade and she told us that she has been working in the store for almost 73 years. The place takes you back in time and slows you down to enjoy life as it is lived in the country.

It is a long drive but worth it....a very special place to fish!

Glad you had some catching to go with all that fishing. I have 2 comments... first I'm betting you didn't have any problems with gnats (was that 3 amigos and 1 cigar?), and from what I remember of Quades the only thing slow was the first step through the door, then you pick up speed till you hit the back wall at the bottom of the hill.
I had that same crappy tide Friday, but there were plenty of willing croakers on the 20' edge. Next weekend we'll have incomming tide all morning, both days.

Bob,

It looked like my boat was on fire....cigars were lit the whole time. Dan smokes the big 52 ring size....what a blast. And you are right about Quades, when you come in you start heading down hill! tongue

I will down there again on Saturday but will probably just stay in the Wicomico!
