I ended up not going racing in NJ this weekend so I took the new yak to Pohick. It wasn't long before getting the first of many fat but short bass.
Then a baby striper near the same spatterdock area I caught a larger one last summer.
Then working up the creek the water was getting clearer and I was catching at least one fish on every lay down or submerged log. None were really worth taking a picture. Because the wind was blowing from the east all day, low tide wasn't that low. Fortunately back in the creek the wind was nothing like out in the bay. I headed to an area off the creek and came across this huge invasive crawfish. A Red Swamp Crawfish aka Louisiana Crawfish, Procambarus clarkii. These are what make all the holes in the mud along the creek.
On the way back down the creek I finally caught some fish big enough to count for KayakWars. First this 2lb 12oz.
And then nearby this 3lb 10oz.
In all I caught about 30 bass, plus that striper, one white perch and several sunfish. I didn't do so well the next day during the NHBA tournament. I caught 4 or 5, but only one 15"+. The others were only .25-.5" short.
The paddle back to the launch sucked because of the 15-20mph headwind. Though I did find that if I sat at the rear of my cockpit I could still actually maintain about 3mph through the chop fairly easily.

Nice! I caught a bass last year that spit a half digested crawfish that looked like that one straight into Thai's back.
