Fletcher's, 4-26-13

I met up with Curly and Bruce at 0530 and on down the road to Gravelly we went. In the old days, Curly and I would be on the water at 0530. Oh well....    roll

Anyway, it was a gorgeous morning....

....but it is a slow ride up to the fishing grounds.

Our 1st stop at a known striper hole did not produce so Curly wanted to go up above Chain Bridge. I was ready even though I had not done it in years. But I always feel comfortable with Curly's know how. It took us a few tries before we got the anchor to hold but once it did, we were in a spectacular part of the river.

I think I caught the 1st fish but it was a herring that hit a shad dart. A few minutes later I hooked into something but it was all 65lb braid. I wanted it out of  the water so I started bringing it in, Cuban yo yo style. To my surprise, there was a fish on the line big_smile

A nice channel cat! I didn't hook him but I caught him. I got some ribbing from the crew.....

We were all catching herring on the darts and finally a hickory shad made an appearance.

But we got no stripers so on down the river we went. As we sped down river, we jigged and threw rattletraps but right before some rocks, both FF screens lit up and we knew that's were we wanted to be so we anchored.

Then...it was hammer time! We slammed the hickories....

This was one of Curly's 10 doubles!

More hickories....

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/New%20Kiko/013-18_zps57b20787.jpg

Finally, I got a better hit and it was a convict!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/New%20Kiko/014-19_zps9a56b1cf.jpg

Curly got one too!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/New%20Kiko/015-16_zps0d78641b.jpg

And the hickories kept slamming our lite tackle!

A few notes:

1. Curly's caught 10 doubles, I caught one (Bruce did not get a double)!

2. When Curly and Bruce sat down to eat a sammie, I caught 10 hickories...while I ate my sandwich.

3. Bruce hooked a decent carp but he got off.

4. Green/yellow is what they wanted....we did get a couple on white/red.

5. On the way back, I caught a non legal size striper on a rattletrap.

6. We caught at least 100 Hshads, Curly had at least 50!!

7. It really was a nice day to out on the water, we all enjoyed it to the max!big_smile

Lots of catching!

Now that I'm back from FL I really need to get out to Fletcher's again while the spawning runs are active.  Maybe tomorrow afternoon into evening. I've got a new yak now and after my first outing with it today I'm really liking it.  I may hit Pohick Sunday morning too.

You sit anywhere you want within the opening.  Or stand.   It's really stable and doesn't stress my back like a normal yak seating position.  Loads of cargo space too.

Re: Fletcher's, 4-26-13

Just wanted to add my two cents worth:

1. Ernie and Curly are great to fish with. Very helpful in trying to get the "new guy" catching fish, as opposed to watching them catch so many.
2. Only my 2nd trip ever to Fletchers area and my first trip beyond Chain Bridge. Absolutely spectacular views up river to the rapids.
3. Saw some snakeheads in the rapid and deep water above the bridge. Destroyed my belief that they were lazy fish sitting in backwater areas.
4. Curly probably can't go out fishing on the river two days in a row as he needs to rest his arms and wrists from reeling in so many fish.
5. The route is unique...historical views, sporting scenes (i.e. crew racing), mother nature at her best, spectacular scenery (and I don't just mean nature).
6. Ernie and Curly have enough fish stories to keep you entertained and educated all day long.

Can't wait for the next opportunity to fish with these guys...

Re: Fletcher's, 4-26-13

I went out late night on Thursday for the full moon and jigged up about a dozen stripers from shore.  Most were near 20" with two in the upper 20s.  Even though there was a lot of surface action the fish wanted the jig on bottom in 20'.  Then I left for the flats and fished hard for two days with only one 30" striper to show for it.  Moral of the story.... Never leave the Potomac.

That sounds like an awesome day of fishing!  I love Fletcher's!

T's yak actually looks pretty functional.  I bet it tracks real well and is very stable.  What is that fishing pole doing strapped to the bow?

Re: Fletcher's, 4-26-13

I know a well known Capt. that had a flats trip on Friday but chose the Potomac just south of DC instead. Moral of this story...they scored well with 18 stripers up to 30"! One on a fly!

It holds the transducer.

If anyone wants to try it out, let me know which lake you want to meet at.  So far it's been very successful at catching fish.

I like your new ID pic with the shark.

I haven't even had time to get my kayak out on the lakes this year!.. Will let you know when and where, when I get the opportunity.
