5-31-08, Potomac River (Fletcher's area) report

As mentioned before, Carl Johnson and I used to fish together all the time in the 80s but we had not fished the Potomac River (DC) in many a year.

So today, we set out to try for some stripers in his 17’ Rhino. At 1st, we weren’t sure if we should troll the channel or make the trek up to Fletcher’s but after reading Curly’s report from Thursday, the decision was made to head up river. We did troll the Kennedy Center wall and beyond but all we picked up was trash so we brought the lines in and made a bee line to Fletcher’s (at No Wake speed).

Twice along the way, the fish finder lit up and we stopped to see what we could pick up but that really was not the plan so we moved on up and eventually settled in just below the cove in 22 feet of water on the VA side.

Carl threw the sibiki (he was the designated bait boy) and I threw a few different kinds of jigs. It didn’t take long for Carl to nail a herring which would serve at striper/cat fish bait.

We put out 3 lines with cut bait and before too long; Carl took the skunk off the boat after he landed one of 7 cat fish for the day. But it was not a biggie and I threw it back without a picture. Carl, being a minnow on pacemakerfishing.com, was not too happy! A few minutes later, he landed a nice blue cat…..picture below!!

Not to be outdone, I too landed a cat fish and now we both had caught fish but no stripers yet…..

….until Carl got into this one!

Not to be outdone again, I then landed this beauty!

For the day, we caught three species (blue, bull and channel) of cat fish for a total of seven. We also caught ten stripers, four of them being keepers (+ 18”). Some of the stripers were caught on small white perch as well as cut herring. And we also increased out catching by actually "luring" the fish to ht the bait. We did not let the bait sit, we bounced it a bit (slight jigging) and that increased the catch probability for stripers (and lowered the cat catch probabilities).

These were some very fat little stripers!!

It was a great day on the water, a little windy but we decided to pull the anchor around 11:30 as the wind was really kicking up!

This was a good decision based on the storms that hit a little later in the afternoon!

Re: 5-31-08, Potomac River (Fletcher's area) report

I see Ernie has already posted a review of our excursion to Fletchers' Cove. I realize that I am a novice at this computer posting but I do have fifty plus years of experience at fishing Fletchers' Cove. Why must I be classified as MINNOW? Well, so much for that.

As I said in my first posting, Ernie has been my best student, so when he showed up at my house to go fishing in my boat I started to load my Fletchers' tackle boxes and heavy rods. It was at this point that my prize pupil told me to bring NOTHING. " I have everything we could ever need " he said. This seemed very strange to me to be leaving home on a fishing trip, with no tackle; but after all, I was with my star student. He then began showing me box after box of lures, jigs, spoons, rods and reels. I was very impressed! He has learned well. Off we go.

As he said in his review of our trip, we tried trolling with no success. When we got anchored and ready to bottom bounce, I caught a few herring. I turned to Ernie and asked, "In which box do you keep your hooks?". It was at this point that he realized, he had not BROUGHT ANY HOOKS!!! I am certain that no one reading this review, has ever gone fishing without hooks! I began considering our options. Perhaps I should suggest we look through his magnificent lure collection for something that we could disassemble to get a hook. It was at this point that Ernie showed me a piece of cardboard, that I had on the boat, with some very old hooks and leaders. This saved the day. WORD OF ADVICE--Anyone going fishing with Ernie--BRING HOOKS!

I think we managed just fine with our inventory! roll Good thing we only lost 1 rig....but I had some 6/0 trailer hooks as a back up. All of my terminal tackle is on my boat!

Thank you for the report. I'm fairly new to fishing DC waters and I'm very interested in learning how to fish here... I do find such reports to be helpful.

Re: 5-31-08, Potomac River (Fletcher's area) report

Bob,

This morning, Carl and I talked about whether or not we could catch stripers and cats in the Washington Channel using cut bait. I bet it can be done. The weight would be 1 or 2 ounces since there is not much current (not like Fletcher's). The key would be if there is any bait up there. I also think jigging would work IF there are any schollies schooling up.

If I was a rockfish, I would be at Fletcher's since there is bait (at least last week there was). But you never know!

Curly and I have marked bait in the WC in the summer and certainly in fall and early winter.

Let us know if you go and how you do, good or bad.

Ernie
