Susquehanna Flats Kayak Fishing Jamboree 2012

Over the weekend I participated in the first annual Susquehanna Flats Kayak Fishing Jamboree benefitting Heroes on the water. It was a blast! Great weather, great company, and pretty decent fishing. It is definitely a fishery to check out! I fished with JFFoley on Saturday and some of the other Maryland Kayak fishing crew on Sunday. Sunday was better for numbers but I caught one big fish on Saturday.

I missed the weigh in but I would have won with this fish!

Oh and this is also a good example of what a dry top feels like... Someone choking you!

That's the question every year. This year's special C&R season on the Flats is from 3/1 to 5/3. Conditions are right and the fish are biting right now, but it could end at any time. Things like water clarity, temps and wind all play a roll. The fish are going to spawn every year, but conditions don't always allow for catching them. Luckily the Jamboree was at the right time.

WTG Michael, great fish

It's on up there. Water clarity is good with temps pushing 60 and we lucked out with very little wind making great conditions for the kayak.

We missed an earlier bite on Saturday. Saw a few fish but Michael was clearly the pool winner. I saved getting skunked with a hickory shad. On a rubber eel of all things. In the mouth! Not much of a fight. :-)

Michael made the front page of the SFKFJ web page: http://sfkfj.com/ This was the organizers first event up there and they did a great job. Good time. Can't beat a weekend of camping and kayak fishing with a bunch of good people.

Congrats again Michael!

Re: Susquehanna Flats Kayak Fishing Jamboree 2012

Fish was caught on a glass ghost x-rap, the shallow diving suspending slashbait version. I had a buddy there yesterday who got skunked but found an area where the rockfish were actively spawning. He said it was incredible and saw some fins that looked like shark fins they were so huge. Definitely some big fish up there and they should be hungry soon!

Anyone familiar with the process for a C&R citation in MD?

Re: Susquehanna Flats Kayak Fishing Jamboree 2012

That is an awesome fish for sure.  What were the messurements?  This year up there was incredible for stripers.  No big rains.  I caught hundreds in a few trips but not many big ones.  At night, we shined a light into the water and it was incredible.  Every square inch of the surface was covered up wtih fish, mostly small but a good number of big ones around, they just didn't want to hit anything.

I've done the c and r citation thing a few times.  It's easy, make it a pdf, email the picture in and you'll get your citation.  I think this year you need a signature of a whitness but it never used to be that way.  Easy though, no mailing it in or going anywhere, stripers must be 40 inches for a citation and I'd say yours was in the upper 40's if not at that majic 50#.

Best lure for us this year was tony accetta spoon, crystal minnow floating or smack it still water popper with a 3 foot leader off the rear teble to a 6 inch clouser minnow or deciever fly.  They hit the fly most of the time.  THe number of big fish we spooked up on the flats just drifting over them was insane.

Plus the Potomac had record numbers of stripers in it this year too.  Caught most of my bigger fish over 30 inches on 6 inch sassy shads on 1oz jig heads or 10 inch BKD plastics.  I had one night near fletchers that was incredible last weekend, all at night.  This week, it's all dried up.  Dead.  No more big fish.  The ocean and Indian River inlet is producing big fish already.  That's where they all went.  Just that fast too.  Insane.

Going musky fishing tonight for the super moon.  Or what's left. SHould have gone last night.
