Sad news- Jose Wajebe was killed in a plane crash today (4-6-12).

The victim of the single-engine plane crash in Everglades City has been identified as Jose Wejebe, star of "Spanish Fly," a fishing show on the Outdoor Channel.

Wejebe, who lived in the Florida Keys, had just taken off in a single-engine plane when he crashed into a field beside the runway at Everglades Airpark. The plane then burst into flames. Officials still do not know what caused the crash.

Wejebe started fishing on Miami beaches as a boy after his family fled Cuba in the 1960s, according to the Outdoor Channel’s website. Then he built a following with his weekly TV show, taking viewers from the Florida Keys, to Costa Rica, to Brazil.

Wejebe also volunteered at several charities, including the Make a Wish Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Mr Wajebe was a great ambassador for the fishing community. Sad to hear of his passing.
