Fletcher's 4/5

Bruce and I met up in Greats Falls.  We got on the water around 3pm and headed up the river.  Just before 3:30 is when I got my first fish.

Not long after on another cast, as my line was settling to the water a cormorant was flying up the river.  It only took an instance for me to realize what was about to happen.  The bird snagged the line and continued up river.  Eventually the silver buddy was pulled from the water and made its way to the bird.  Once it did it apparently hooked the bird.  This caused a pendulum effect slamming the bird into the water, while at the same time the silver buddy broke off.  About a minute later it finally surfaced and had what seemed like 'what just happened' body lanuage.  LOL  I wish I had that on video. It eventually flew away.

We both caught a few shad in the area before letting the river carry us down. I found one white perch by just letting a silver buddy dangle about 30ft down.  Before that, doing the same, I briefly had something sizable on.  We finished up fishing in the area between Gordon's rock and the mud/sand bar.  The hickories were really active here.

Re: Fletcher's 4/5

Just wanted to add my two cents worth. This was my first trip to Fletcher's and my first time catching hickory shad. They are surprisingly strong, fast swimmers, and great leapers. Now I know why they are so popular.

Travis is an entertaining guide...especially when catching cormorants out of the air. Wasn't sure if they were in season so I'm glad he released it...or was it the cormorant that released him??? Anyway, a beautiful day to be out on the water.

Wow, the one lure I wouldn't want to have on my line in that situation, it would be a silver buddy. I'm glad you managed not to hook him. I have had a couple sea gulls get caught up in my line before but so far I've been lucky enough not to have to handle any angry and injured birds.

Re: Fletcher's 4/5

Almost caught a cormorant once while dunking live herring on the bottom with a 3 oz sinker.  Watched the cormorant dive near where my herring was............and then saw my line go slack.  Bird came up with my herring in its mouth.  I yanked it out before it could swallow it.  They cannot swallow until they come up to the surface.  I was lucky not to gut-hook that bird.  Maybe Ernie or Jeff was with me that day?.  I remember that it was me and someone else in the boat...............

Re: Fletcher's 4/5

On a bay trolling trip with Capt Jeff Hammet  in November a few years back, just off the mouth of the Potomac, we hung a nice one on the deep line (approx 25'). After a pretty good fight, this is what came aboard.

Sorry you lost your silver buddy, but if you're cormorant fishing go big or go home.
