4-4-12, Specs and reds in Florida

I came down to Orlando Fl for a conference on Sunday morning. The 1st meeting started at 1 pm and went well.  Monday was hectic as we started with breakfast meetings and ended with dinner meetings. Tuesday was no different.  But wait a minute.....this is supposed to be a fishing report!!

So on Wednesday we scheduled an all day, intense session with Capt. Tom Van Horn.......to fish at Indian River Lagoon, within view of Cape Canaveral.  Capt. Tom is also a firefighter at the Shuttle complex.

We met up at 0630 at the Kennedy Point Ramp. I was joined by Steve Barnes. We do these side meetings often as he also loves to fish.

Well....time to get on the plane, the rest of the story and pictures will unfold later.

The weather in the morning was great and the sunrise was spectacular!

It did not take long for Steve to get hooked up....we were using top water baits.

Capt. Tom settled the fish....

....so we could get a good shot!

I followed suit with a spec (22+") and then a nice redfish (picture coming later).....!

I did try to get Steve to lip one of the specs.....

The boat!

And these are home made plugs made out of Spanish cedar (hall-em-in baits)....they work!

We also caught a few on jigs.

Scenery.....

There were some manatee around....

....plus the Shuttle museum.

We then caught a bunch of ladyfish which are mini tarpons...they like to jump.

Steve caught the last fish on a swim fluke.

The last time I fished with Capt. Tom was in April of '08. It was blowing hard and he wanted to cancel but said no way as long as it was safe. It was tough fishing that day.

On Wednesday, the weather was perfect but the big schools of fish were no where to be found so we hunted the flats to find single fish. If you led them right, you had a fish on. Sight fishing at its best.

I cannot wait to do this again....
