Weekend Fishing

I fished both saturday and sunday this weekend. Saturday I went to gravelly point with a friend on his boat for 2-3 hours. We only caught a small yellow perch while out on the boat. I was not satisfied yet and decided to take a few casts under the docks back at the ramp. First cast and i hooked up with a 12 inch crappie. the next 5 consecutive casts i caught crappie ranging from 8 in being smallest to 14 in being biggest. 4 of these fish were in the 12-14 in range. The crappie action slowed and i made one more cast and caught a beautiful rock bass. All this action happened in the 10 mins it took to get the boat out of the water and everything packed. Who needs a boat...

The next day Travis, my dad, and i went to fletchers cove to try for some shad. got there around 7 am when it was still a little chilly out. Before my dad and i even get out on the water Travis catches a crappie while his spoon is dangling in the water on the side of the yak. As we made our way upstream we saw fish jumping everywhere. this set hopes high as we came to the first fishing spot. I got a few fish on for about 30 seconds each but did not get them to the boat. then my dad yells "fish on". I look over and his light action rod with shad darts on was doubled over. I get over to him and it takes another 5 mins for him to get the fish to the boat. It turns out to be a 16 lb catfish who took the shad dart.
(Travis has this picture and will hopefully post them soon)
Just after my dads catfish another catfish of equal or bigger size jumps 6 inches out of the water 20 feet from my yak. i never thought a catfish would do that.
We go on for a while without any fish then i hookup with a much smaller catfish.

I then hook up to a much bigger fish which i assume was a catfish which had my shad rod doubled over. The fish pulled off 30 secs into the fight so we will never know how big it was

The action subsides and we end the day with one more small catfish each and i caught one small white perch. Overall it was an awesome weekend of fishing.

Re: Weekend Fishing

Thanks for posting the pics and vid T.  They turned out great.  I caught that on the smallest reel I have, with about 6lb test I think.  In the video I am reeling in constantly because the thing was about 50ft deep and that reel only takes in about 2 inches per turn.  Plus the cat put up a pretty good fight and ran about 5 or 6 times.  A lot of fun to catch (I could do without the slime though!  It covered my pants and boat).

Re: Weekend Fishing

I couldn't feel my toes until Monday!

And I left some nice WARM wetsuit boots in the garage.  I had a lot of time to think about being better at remembering things like that while I was sitting in the kayak that morning.
