Bay report, 7-23-11

So what if it was hot!

Greg and Tyler Folts met me at 0515 and on to the bay we went. Initially, we were going to go to the Severn but I had heard a few reports of breaking stripers a little further south so we decided on Deale.

Our main target: stripers

When we got to the breakwater we saw that the bay was flat calm so off we went....straight for the mouth of the Choptank. We fished a well known point and had a few bite offs but no luck on the stripers. As we drifted off the point Tyler said, "got one" and we prepared the net for his first striper....NOT. It was a 12-13" speckled trout! His 1st ever!

You are kidding? I went nuts...no way Jose but it was! The 1st spec on my boat!

A few minutes later, I started throwing the UL for perch and nabbed one and immediately, Tyler gets the teeny Loomis and nails his 1st white perch!

The kid is hot but Greg has yet to score but it did not matter. he was happy for his boy! Priceless!

We then moved to the south side of the mouth (long run) and we fished some areas that Sherman Bainard had shown me on a trip a few years back....

Fishy looking but no hits!

The wind started to kick up and we were many miles from Deale so I told the crew we should start working up the bay in case it started to get rough. The wind was welcomed and it did not create much of an issue so we went back to where we started.

We work over the point and I get a semi strike form a striper on a top water bait. The anticipation grew but there were no more hits. Once again, we started to drift away from the point and Greg declares that he has a fish on....finally, our 1st striper! NOT again! He lands this 17" beauty!

Nice...two specs.

We then called a few friends who were chasing breaking fish but they had seen none so we decided to give Poplar a try and there was zero action. Back to the main bay we went and we ran around looking for birds. Finally, Sharp Eye Tyler sees some breaking fish (small bait) so we park in the middle of them to wait for an eruption.....which never happened. We never marked any fish...only bait. Very frustrating but that's the bay.

At this point we decided to go back to Deale and hammer some white perch before going home. As soon as we got inside the breakwater... the red tide! I am not happy but I have no other choices.

It was really slow but we each picked some up....

Greg's 1st WP!

A nice almost 12 incher!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/013-7.jpg

Just before I caught that 12 incher, I caught one that went 12.75" that was a brute. He was massive! Tyler and Greg could not believe the girth of this thing (neither could I). So I posed for a picture with my ruler but somehow it did not turn out. Needless to say, Greg felt bad but no worries....there are more of them out there. We caught most of the fish in deeper water, away from the wall. Tyler 1st discovered this and we followed suit. The kid has a keen understanding of this game.

At 2 PM, Greg says, it's 2PM. Time flew and we decided to get off the water. We drank a ton of water and G2 but were never uncomfortable...except when we got attacked by the  flies. The three of us don't mind the heat but it did feel good when we ran.....which we did often and far!

Totally enjoyed the day!

Mr. Rojas that was an awesome day on the water even if we didn't get into any striper!! Once i had that spec in the boat my day was complete! it would have been nice to get a striper or two but that just means we have to go back again in the fall!! You were completely right about those white perch they may be small but they fight hard and are very fun on UL tackle!!

Thanks again for the great day of fishing!!

Ernie's 12.75 inch WP had shoulders the size of Mike Tyson.  It looked like a whole different species compared to the pic he posted of the 12 incher.  It was a true monster WP.  I feel terrible I messed up the pic.  But, we figured out where the big ones were hiding.  We will just have to go back and catch another beast to get a good pic.  Next time I will take an insurance pic as well to be sure.

I think we figured out Ernie put about 35 or 40 miles on that boat Saturday. An awesome way to stay cool and catch a few great fish along the way.
