July 4th Float Upper Potomac

We launched at Algonkian at 5:15 and tried for an hour to meet up with the floatilla coming out of Goose Creek.  Water level was too low for my boat and could only make it up to Geezer World (about a 1/2 mile from Goose Creek sad ).  We caught 11 smallies and a big sunnie.  Ellen had the 2 biggest fish with this nice 14 incher:

and this 13 incher:

Biggest that I could muster was 12 inches:

Got off the water at 10:15 and never saw a jet ski! smile
It was a beautiful morning on the river.

Re: July 4th Float Upper Potomac

You guys did great! Were you using small baits?

I am sure the others will post their catches!

T. had at least 5 species the last time I saw him. All I kept hearing was "got another one"! He even offered to lend me one of his baits.

I got a great cardio workout after I lost track of time and had floated waaaay down river. I paddled for 30 straight minutes until I reached the shallow water in Goose. What a workout....made lemonade out of lemons. Oh, for my fishing report....I caught two little ones, one of my worst fishing days on the Mac. But I took a lot of pictures!

Here's Tyler and his Dad Greg at the put in...

Re: July 4th Float Upper Potomac

Was really a beautiful day on the water, but I think the fish went to the beach for the holiday weekend!  We were all fishing the far side and then all of a sudden Ernie and T were gone.  Instead of chasing them down to Great Falls, we decided to head back up Goose Creek around 10am and get some food in our bellies.  I got 2 LMB, 1 on Goose Creek and 1 on the river. The biggest of the two was about 1.5 lbs.  Tyler caught 3 SMB, the Channel Cat (thanks for taking the pic Ernie), and a Sunny (gotta count the Sunny when you only have 3 bass for the day).  Tyler can tell you about the fish.  I didn't see them up close. This was our first time out with you guys and we really enjoyed it.  Thanks for allowing us to tag along.  We look forward to the next opportunity.  Sorry I don't have pics.  Hopefully I am getting a good waterproof camera (Pentax Optio WG-1) for my birthday in August.  Then I can contribute a bit more.

A side note.  I talked to the 2 guys that were camping with the 2 Kayaks on shore and they said they nearly died last night when the storm came through.  I guess a lot of those downed trees happened last night.  They hid under the picnic table hoping no trees landed on them (a lot of good the picnic table would have done them).  I wonder if the storm had anything to do with the tough fishing in that area?

Re: July 4th Float Upper Potomac

Not sure what the deal was with the fishing today....Ellen (Curly's wife) took us to task!

There were at least 6 jet boats tat fished in the area as well.....

I also talked to the guy who was wading at the mouth of the Goose. He couldn't believe how many of us came  out of the Goose.

Re: July 4th Float Upper Potomac

Fishing seemed fine to me.  Most fish I've ever caught in the Goose and river in a day.  Had three smallies at 12-13" and a few baby ones, one LMB about 12" and some baby ones, four channel cats in the 16-18" 2-2.5lb range, a hand-sized bluegill, and probably a dozen of the redbreast sunfish of every size.  All but one were on that single type of lure in four different color patterns.   The last cat was caught on a fire tiger Bomber A.  I thought I had a snag, it might have been, only for the cat to nail it once it got freed up.

Just saw on the news that a guy riding a bike on the tow path near Whites Ferry yesterday was killed when a tree fell on him during the storms.

Like I said, T. had the hot hand. It was cool to watch him get dragged around by that cat! Nice job out there!

I like to ride my road bike but I rarely ride in the afternoons for this very reason.....sad.

Re: July 4th Float Upper Potomac

Who needs a camera when you got a T?! haha - Thanks for the action shots T.

We had a decent day on the Goose. We didn't venture into the Potomac. We each caught fish including smallmouth, largemouth, sunfish, bluegill, and crappie. Everything was caught on a fly with mostly a dead presentation. A slight jerk and then letting it fall was the trick. After about 930, the bite died off.

Good times and Happy 4th!

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!

Re: July 4th Float Upper Potomac

T absolutely had the hot hand.  He had already caught one before I ever got the kayak in the water!
