Deale-Poplar report, 7-1-11

Lessons learned:

1. Don't run across the bay when you are only fishing a 1/2 day and there are 1-3 footers out there (17' boat)
2. Stick to your plan when the tide is in your favor
3. Don't fish on the Friday before the 4th and expect to get home on time

OK....now for the report.

Dan Lord, Patrick Cosgriff and I were on the water by 7:15 AM so we could chase some white perch. The tide we going out...perfect. But no, I had to make the run across to poplar to see if there were any stripers hungry. The 1st third of the trip went easy and then the chop came to play. Yep....got the crew wet! I just finished telling Patrick that since the 1st Targa trip where he got wet (50 degree water) that I had mastered the boat and managed to keep everyone dry. Not today.

We hunted around Poplar for a bit but found no fish and very few marks so back across we went.

I now know the limitations of my boat! Once back at Deale, it did not take Patrick long to take the skunk off.

This was his 1st shallow water UL WP!! I followed suit...

... but Dan had not yet gotten the feel for catching. Patrick and I each had 5 fish and then Dan got his 1st. He understood the technique....check out the bend of that Custom J&J Sports rod!

....and went on to catch several more fish including the biggest of the day at 1/8 off the 12" mark!

Very nice fish!

It was a nice relaxing time....we used the UL tackle which makes the game that much more fun. Lots of bent rods today and lots of the fish were horses. We caught about 40....blame me for the low number since I took them on a wild goose ride in the AM!!

The bite basically shut down around 11 (dead low tide). We managed a few more and then called it a day to sight see...

....while we followed Capt. George back in.

On to Ledo's we went and then back on the road....only to encounter massive traffic on the VA Beltway. We tried to scoot around but everyone was doing the same thing.

Next year...I am heading west with my kayak....away from everyone!

Good times. We also managed to keep a few which are being fileted by Ernie. I got dibs, but maybe I'll share if you all are interested!

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!
