Has anyone here built your own fishing rods? If so did you start with a kit from some place like cabelas or did you just order the blanks, grip, seats, eyes etc?

Josh Turner built two for me....he looks in once in a while and will respond.
The 2 rods that he made for me are favorites.....

I started with a cabelas fly rod kit, and then went straight to ordering my own components individually.
I learned a whole lot from this site, http://rodbuilding.org/list.php?2 and would consider it the premier forum on rod building out there. Very helpful people with lots of good articles. There is alos a rod building book by Tom Kirkman that I would suggest picking up as well. http://www.amazon.com/Rod-Building-Guid … 1571882162
I haven't been making much since the last one I made for ernie, I moved and just don't have the room, but I'm moving again in a few weeks and should have the room to set up shop again. Once I get going, you or anyone else is more than welcome to come watch or I can help you pick out a kit or components and walk ya through it or whatever. it can be quite simple, or involved
here's some of the work I've done for members here

its a very rewarding hobby and I'd encourage anyone that enjoys fishing to consider it.
also, if you post a question here and I don't get to it quickly, shoot me an email. with the moving coming up and my 48 hobbies, not to mention work, I'm not the best about keeping up with the forums these days, but I can always find a minute to help out

First don't buy a kit , It's proabably not what you want if you want to make one yourself. however ..
whithout axcess to materials at wholesale prices this can be a pricey endevor. You might as well buy one off the shelf. This conversation can be better handled by phone check out my web site and get my #
www.jjsportsservice.com . Ernie ( pacemaker ) has done some things with me before , I'm sure he'll back my credentials

I would love to build a rod for myself but most likely, it won't happen.
Josh did some cool things with the 2 rods he built for me. They are a great work but I am sure they took him a long time.
I bought several of Joe's rods (showroom rods). One went to the HS club for a raffle. He donated one as well. I kept 3 and use them often. Not only do they look great but they are good sticks.
Then I sent Joe two older rods for him to bring back to life. They look incredible! I will do more of that in the future.
I am sure that the more experience one has the easier it might be to build......but it is very labor intensive.

I'm not looking to save money or anything like that, more of a just looking for a rainy day thing to build. I think I have found my next winter project!!
Thanks L1Ranger, I'll shoot you an email if I get stuck.
