The Potomac on the fly, 6-10-11

John Nguyen and I fished the normal DC haunts today with our fly rods....no conventional tackle on the boat whatsoever! We met at Gravelley at 5:45 AM and winthin 20 minutes we were on the  water. High tide was around 3:30 AM, low was at 10:45. Not the greatest of tides but we had little wind.

We started in the WC at the hump by McNair but no one came calling. I did have one mini blowup on my top water fly but that was it. So we moved on down to the rocks as John goty hit by this nice bass!

He caught another little one but that was it. Next was the statute where we marked a lot of fish but were not able to score. BTW...John and I both started with floating lines and then went to intermediate and full sink. We then moved up to the basin....

....and I was able to catch two sub legal stripers. The doors were open, the current was flowing but we had a hard time catching!

As we moved out of the WC, we stopped at a few places to see if anyone was home.

Not to be so to the big river we went....

We started at Blue Plains but the factory was running at full tilt and the stink was almost unbearable. At least I got to show John where the aquarium is....not sure how much of what I told him about BP he was buying. The tide was just starting to come in so I wanted to show him Penrod Cove (can you believe that guy named the Spoils after himself?).

We started at the shore lie on the west side and I hooked up....even got a nice head shake but I am having trouble identifying this fish.

Once we moved to the slabs, I was able to pick up a nice LMB on a CK minnow.

John then hooked in to a very nice channel cat but the fish was shy and did not want his picture taken. A few minutes later I heard John groan and the next series of pictures will  tell the story.

For my fly only excursion....we will consider this a success!

Great day to be on the water!!

I believe that is a big gulp bass! Nice report.

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!
