Susky River, 5-30-11

High, muddy and fast but Dave Shindler still put us on fish! Dan, Mo and I met Dave at 0700 at Conewago Creek in York Haven. We boarded his barge and started to hit some spots.

Mo took the skunk off the boat with an undersized walleye.....

Another!

....and his 1st smallie ever!

Dan followed suit....

We all caught a few walleyes and some small smallies but we moved over to the dam to see if the smallies were hanging around the wall.

They were not so we moved again just below the plant and proceeded to catch some better fish. The main river was unfishable so we went in to the creek. For the next several hours we caught quite a few smallies (largest was 16'5") and walleyes (largest was 19").

He does like his fishies....

We used crankbaits, jigs, curly tails, spinnerbaits, scroungers....you name it.

At one point, in the heat of the day, we conveniently anchored under a bridge. We managed to catch a few fish.

It was here that we had the most excitement....

A very nice channel cat that fought hard!

However, I hooked and lost at least three fish until I figured out that I needed to pause before setting the hook. Once that happened, I caught 4-5 real good smallies while just letting my one claw crawdad jig just sit, twitching once in a while.

Mo had a dry spell for a bit but Dave caught a few right under his nose which inspired him to catch some more walleyes (his specialty today) and some nice smallies. Today, Mo would catch his 1st smallie ever!! Today, as he always does, Mo would whoop it up every time he caught a fish, bringing a smile to Dave's face every time.

Dan was very consistent during the day and caught fish on a variety of lures including a fluke/tube gizmo that got slammed by an aggressive smallie.

At around 1:30 PM, we all had about had it and Dave declared that we were done.

We caught lots of fish, not any really big ones, but a steady picking of fat fish including 4-5 really nice channel cats. The one I caught nearly took the rod out of my hands when he hit the lure.

An excellent day on the water. As always, fishing with Dave Shindler is a pleasure....]

Looks like a fun trip despite the water level. It also looks hot out there!!!
