4-25-08, Potomac River (DC waters) fishing report

Denny Durst (Atlanta), Ruben Johnson (Pittsburgh) and I have been waiting for months for this day to arrive so we cold go up to fish Fletcher's. But....the weather had other plans as the river was high and dirty.

We put in at Gravelly Point and headed over to the Washington Channel where the water was a bit cleaner. Our plan was to fish for largemouth bass with an eye out for stripers and blue cats.

We started at the hump near the point of Ft. McNair but had no success so we moved over to the Haines Point wall and threw at the submerged wood pilings....good decision and Ruben got his 1st ever Potomac river largemouth bass....

Interesting sight....the Pride of Baltimore was in town!

Ruben and Denny used fish together a lot and all I kept hearing is how Denny always caught the most fish (usually little ones). At one point, Ruben and I had caught fish and Denny  was skunked until he hooked (foul) this shad!

Later, he caught a 3" white perch but finally, as we trolled out of the WC, he was able to reel in this nice beauty!

We also managed two blue cats. One slammed my white spinner bait and the other was caught on the troll.

We really did make the best of a tough situation. The river was really not that fishable but these out of towners got some decent fishing in.

PS- At some point, the prop to my trolling motor decided to do a disappearing act. I wondered why we weren't moving when I had the motor on high. A quick trip down to Sportsman’s Center in Woodbridge and we got everything taken care of!

Time to go fishin' again!
