With a couple of Orvis giftcards and some bday loot, I purchased my first fly fishing outfit. It is a 5 wt. I ended up with the full gamit of line, leaders, tippets, and flies. I am ready to go!

Why a 5wt I need to ask??

Sweet......I need a partner to go white perch fishing with the long sticks!
PS- tippets are overrated....you can tie pieces of mono and floro and you are there.

I went with a 5 wt to have the option of fishing for bass or trout. I didn't want something too light or too stout. I hope to try my hand fishing some local streams and figured if I need to go big for bass that I have plenty of bass outfits.

The 5 is a perfect choice....until you get the bug. Then, you will add to the arsenal. The only disadvantage is that you won't be able to throw the big furry flies (Waldorf Bugs as Capt. Mike calls them) for bass but there are plenty of other flies (deceivers, clousers, woollies etc) that will get the job done.
Blue gills on that rod will be a blast!

I was itching this weekend to take it out for a try, but I couldn't find the time. I hope that will change in the VERY near future.

Very nice.....you will need discipline to load that baby up....nice and slow.

Slow and steady wins the race. I have some heavier flies and streamers and perhaps I am naive considering our dry fly approach in Montana, but I want to establish a certain patience with this style of fishing. Maybe this is just the way for me to do that!

Last night, at the PRSC meeting (which was really good), I talked to Bob Abrams who is an incredible fly caster. He uses old Fenwick fiberglass stick and thrown the line as far as he wants. Has nothing to do with the effort or equipment. it's all in the technique.
The club's may meeting ("boat night") will be held at Riverbend Park. Bob will be ther and can demonstrate how he throws.
