Yesterday, I threw a few rocks into the pond right behind my house. i heard a big splash, turned around and saw a big carp submarining in and out of the water in circles. This went on for 12-15 seconds.
Just a few minutes ago, Debbie saw the same thing and called me to the window. I did not see it but she said he was submarining from right to left and almost came up on shore.
I know that the two ducks that took off in a hurry weigh less now!
Now, if I could only figure out how to catch him....

Let me know if you have any luck. I read a book a couple of months ago called "Carp on a fly" and they say hooking one with a fly rod is like fighting a large bonefish. Maybe presenting a fly that matches the hatch might work. I tried everything else and still can't figure them out...

Khahn- I doubt I will ever try. I spend very little time fishing Cedar and when I do, it's in the same 2-3 spots.
So...what is the hatch? What do they go after? Certainly not mulberries, you have been there and done that.
This carp was going nuts!

Was this in the cove at cedar? Capt. Mike taught me a few carp fishing tips at the NHBA fishing flea market. Maybe i'll have to try them out!

Yep...in the cove. I want to know about these secret tips.
Hmmmm, why didn't he tell me?

I decided years ago that catching carp is pretty much a random event. If I use carp bait (that pre-made stuff)I catch catfish. If I use mulberries I catch nothing, I use strawberries I catch catfish. If I use sweet corn, I catch nothing (this is after chumming). I have caught carp on rapala minnow that was floating next to my kayak while I dug in my tackle box. I caught one on upper potomac using a rebel craw. If anyone has a super secret recipe send it to me. I would love to watch my rod bend in half catching one of them or get towed around beaver dam.

My secert to catching carp is a bow and arrow. Which won"t help you much in Ashburn.
They are an Invasive species, if there are any PETA people watching.

I have a couple of friends that are fly fishermen and they target them in the C & O Canal in DC. I've posted a few pics before. This is when the mulberries are dropping.
I'm with you, targeting them is an art. I remember watching Khahn sitting under the mulberry bush with 4-5 rods....and he sat and sat nad sat.

Sounds like early spawning behavior.

last year i fished pavalion by boat for a while
i saw a carp behaving in a similar fashion for a day or two
saw him floating dead along the bank shortly thereafter
do carp really have a measurable impact in terms of grass and algae control?

Grass carp make a difference in keeping invasive grasses in check. Algae are not eaten by any type of carp.

In general they are invasive, though we (or the real estate developer) put these grass carp in Ashburn village.
I had a friend who started fly fishing for carp last year. He mostly used nymph/crayfish patterns and IF the carp were visibly camped out by a mulberry bush would throw berry pattern flies at them.

That is what I want to do one day.....I have stalked them but never saw them camped out.

I walked Cedar last night for 15mins, saw a big group of Carp near the road side of the pond. The pond looked a little "off" how was the fishing at Cedar last year ?

After the great spring last year, Cedar dropped off drastically. Hopefully, we will get an assessment in April when we do some testing.....
