Action has slowed in recent days as runoff has finally made it's way down into the river.
Visibility might be 8" max.
Extreme, low-tides that seem to linger most of the day.
crappie bites require extreme patience-1/16 ounce jigs held almost motionless-just off the bottom.
a raging bass and YP bite has evaporated
whereas a casual effort a week ago might yield a hit nearly every cast in the zone, the same offerings go begging yesterday afternoon.
Game seems to be all about patience again. Action should fire up again next week as conditions improve.
That river has the spirit of a woman you cant help but love

According to my VDGIF calendar on my wall, the yellow perch run peaks the 23rd of this month. Has anyone kayaked the Occoquan for them?

Thanks fr the report Jeff! It's the calm before the BIG BITE!!
I have seen yakers out there in the past, not too bad of a paddle for the ramp. I have never done it (nor will I if the water is cold).

i havnt kayaked, but plenty do-i see more all the time.
a relatively calm day, you will enjoy easy fishing.
the wind blows harder over that river, at water level, than anywhere in the vicinity. i swear some days it makes it's own.
i have caught some fat female YP. The horde is in the area

Jumping Jasper and I are headed there on Sunday morn. Any words of encouragement Big Jeff?

it changes all the time. this afternoon was really tough.
water is almost muddy.
i got 4 fish in about 3 hrs
total hit or miss
another regular scratched out 3 crappie, exercising a degree of discipline .
i hope it gets better by then- i feel like its the dirty water thats putting them off.
Then again i have caught them in muddy water w/ ice chunks floating in it.-in the past
-Maybe a few extra degrees of water temp will help
dirty water will warm faster.
basically it is a crap shoot-i can tell you a few areas to hit for sure
silver buddy is a good tool
crappie jigs, tiny twisters or tubes
maybe a 4" shaky head
shad colors
my experience says dead sticking is usually best
some days i only lift the bait to feel for the sponge-like weight of a fish
i am thinking as of tonight the perch have pulled back out to rt1

We are going early and hopefully some protection from the S-SW winds. We'll be off the water before noon when it is supposed to get gusty.

Got out there yesterday for a bit. The surface was still frozen all the way across before the bend past Hoffmasters. We plowed through it for about 100 yards and didn't see any openings, so we turned around and headed back upriver. Snagged several large gizzard shad on one stretch of rocky bank, but other than that we had no action.
Saw 3 other people out there on kayaks. They all seemed to be having a great deal of trouble with the strong northwest wind. The water was 34 degrees and muddy.

We ended up not going this morning due to a sick spouse.
