BF,
The James River generally gives up catfish 20 to 50 lbs being common and fish weighing in excess of 80 lbs not unheard of. The current weight citation size for a blue cat is 30 lbs. The current VA state record blue cat is 95 lbs 7 oz.
Here are some James River cats people landed:

I love catfishing and based on what Ernie and Curly says, there are 10 pounders in both Cedar and Beech.
Let me know if you ever catch a nice sized cat in either one of those ponds. I'm gonna try to catch one this sunday with some chicken liver.

If you decide to go, one of the best catfish guides on the river is Roger Jones of Hook, Line and Sinker Guide Service. We fished with him three years ago and he never started the outboard. We fished 200 yards from the ramp and landed over 30 blue cats, from 15-35 pounds in the space of just about 3 hours. On another trip, we ran downriver and caught three fish over the 30# mark in just over two hours.
He knows where they are and how to catch them.
