Just got back yesterday from vacation in Outer Banks with siblings' families. Had to leave early because of Earl. Did a little bit of fishing...Caught my first puppy drum ever on a live mullet. Also did some surf fishing and caught several small poms. Tried Bonner bridge for a couple of hours without luck, saw people catching small spots/flounders on cut baits...nothing big.
On a side note...Nearer to home on local water, been catching nice size smallies up and down the Potomac...

Did you take your yak? If not, next time put in at the ramp at Pirate's Cove (accross the street). It Lots of good fishing there without having to paddle far.
Great looking smallies!

Thanks Ernie,
I'll try to hit that location next time with a kayak. I didn't feel comfortable hauling the trailer/kayaks since our 10 yrs old minivan has been acting up lately. I saw a lot of tailing reds on the sound side around sunset but could not get them to hit any of the lures I brought! I need to do some research for the next occasion.

FS,
Nice looking SMB, especially that second one!

Thanks BH.
I discovered that my knots weren't good enough catching these bigger smallies. The regular uni and palomar could not hold the lure and slipped off when some of these fish were thrashing around. I did some research and found that the double-uni and double-palomar knots seem to hold better...

The palomar wasn't holding? What line were you using? Did you wet the knot before you tightened it?

We were using 6lb and 10lb flouro with regular uni knots. After that slipped off while landing the first large smallie, I tried the regular palomar and experienced the same thing with a large cat (4lb+). I always wet the line thoroughly while tying the knots and usually get an Eewww from the kids looking at me...may be it was the generic brand flouro from Cabela (No-Vis).
Do you guys usually land the fish with a net? I always wait until the fish stop thrashing around before holding them and remove the hook. The larger fish seem to thrash around much longer and harder. I want to release the fish asap after the photo, but don't feel comfortable putting my hands anywhere near them and the sharp hooks until they stay still. A large net would be another item to carry and I like to stay light when fishing.

bill dance says over wetting a knot will weaken it
i tie my palomar dry. i have found if it is drawn down just so-i can get by w/o the lip rub
