Lake Frederick 5/29

I was at Summit Point Raceway in WV all weekend, but since Saturday was practice only I decided to try out Lake Frederick in the morning.  It was about 20miles from the track and I got there and started fishing about 6:15.  There were several boats already there.  One of the first things I noticed was how clear the water was compared to everywhere else I've fished.  I forgot my fishfinder but I'd say the bottom was visible at 8ft.  There was lots grass beds along the banks which were awesome for holding fish.  Lots of laydowns too.

The first place I tried was a point across from the boat ramp. Because of the grass I decided to try some topwater.  After a few casts of a Heddon Torpedo I had one hit.  It jumped and got off.  It looked to be about 1.5lb.  I fished the areas along both sides of that point.  I could see plenty of bass below, some looked to be about 5lb.  None were interested in anything I dropped in front of them.  Then I tried the area to the left of the dam but got nothing and saw very little.   So I decided to try the area along the dam.  Here like the other areas the bank drops sharply, 5-10ft out from shore and it's about 8ft deep.  I went with a beetle spin just so I could at least catch something, even small.

I wasn't expecting this though.

It put up a really good fight.

Once again I could see bass swimming around as well as smaller cats, lots of really small bluegill and perch, a crappie and what may have been some small smallmouth.  Seemed like a good time to drop a warm in their faces.  A few tosses of a small creme worm got my first ever plastic worm catch.

I definitely plan on going back and spending more than four hours there.
