Wicomico 5/19

Carl, Mo, and I met at Carl's house and departed for Wicomico around 5am this morning. We got to the ramp around 7am after the obligatory stop at the Chaptico Market/Deli and got underway. We were hoping to catch some white perch since it was Mo's first shallow water trip of the season and we also wanted to try to get a few stripers now that the season has opened.

We started at our normal starting point which is a lagoon that drains through a small opening into the river. When the tide falls the water drains quickly from the small opening and creates a great deal of current that attracts fish. Carl and Mo tossed around striper baits for a while. I put my striper rod down pretty quickly and picked up the UL perch rod. It wasn't long before I caught our first perch.

We kept moving because the current was not yet moving quickly from the lagoon. It didn't take long for Carl and Mo to pick up the UL rods and pretty soon we all started catching perch. We fished the typical rocks, trees, and docks and steadily caught fish. I managed to catch a striper but it wasn't quite "keeper sized"

Mo motored us down to "Bikini Beach" where we caught several more perch.

We went back to the lagoon drain and fished a little but the current still wasn't moving too much. Carl suggested we try "Mrs. Wolf's Cove" farther downriver. We fished a great looking area at the mouth of the cove with loads of trees, concrete, and other assorted junk including what Mo decided must have been an old cotton gin. No fish. I caught a nice one in deeper water off of a big fallen tree at the end of the point that creates the mouth of the cove. Then we moved into the cove and fished some more laydowns, docks, and brushy shorelines. More perch!

A nice perch caught by Carl despite Mo's efforts to sabotage him by knocking him unconscious:

Old Mrs. Wolf's Cove paid off!

By that time it was getting close to quitting time so we went back to the lagoon drain. Nada. Carl convinced us to try a wood wall on the way back to the ramp. Mo and I didn't even pick our rods up because we were skeptical...until Carl caught a nice sized perch on his first cast.

Then it was time to go so we loaded up the boat and got a tip from a local that we will investigate on our next trip.

We fished rocks, docks, and brush covered shoreline. The water temperature stayed around 62 degrees (6 degrees cooler than our last trip on Sunday). We guessed that we probably caught around 30 and kept close to that number.

The cooler:

I always like fishing with Carl and Mo; it's never boring!

I take it you didn't make it up to St. Margaret's Island? That's where all the stripers hang out!  tongue

Nope. We didn't go out that far. There was some wind so we tried to fish near land as much as possible. I have a feeling we would have gone out there if we weren't limited on time or hadn't been catching fish.

Re: Wicomico 5/19

I need to make a decision between fishing there or Eastern Bay on Friday......there are several more spots that Carl won't venture to.

Decisions, decisions!
