Finally got down to my step-sister/brother-in-law's house at Lake Gaston for the first time this year. It was the best fishing we've had down there. We caught some of just about everything.
The scenery from the house.
From the dock in the little backwater I was catching white and yellow perch, bluegill, white crappie and even a small LMB on my tiny white crankbait.
My BIL Steve caught a good size crappie on a spinnerbait. It was his first time using one. We had stopped Walmart on the way down to get some groceries and gear, so he finally bought one after I had been telling him to get one.
We had out several lines with cut perch in order to catch some catfish. Steve did get a 2-2.5lb cat, but he also got this massive snapping turtle.
For comparison to the boat pontoon.
Saturday evening we were tired of the sun so we headed out on the boat with the intention of finding a shady place to fish for a little while before dinner. We weren't finding a spot like I thought we would so I decided we should stop at a large empty boathouse in the main lake. It was 20-22ft deep here. We anchored and I started tossing a jig with a Rage Tail Craw. After hearing these mentioned a lot I bought a package of these at the Walmart. Nothing happening in the slips so I tossed it out towards the end of the boathouse. It went right where I wanted it, but the wind blew the line up on to the dock. I tried to whip it sideways back into the water. I reeled it in anyways figuring could just pop the jig up and over the corner of the dock. That wasn't going to work though with this LMB on the end of the line. LOL
We pulled the anchor so we could retrieve it. We then anchored on the other side of the boathouse. Steve had a few lines out with some cut perch and was able to catch two good size white perch.
We had a fish smorgasbord for dinner.
I have a new goal for fishing at Lake Gaston. Gar I was fishing from the neighbors dock when I saw dark large mass moving my way. My first thought was muskie because of the size and shape, but it had black spots all over it. There were a few of them together. Websites say they grow to 3ft, but one of them was more like 4ft! It wouldn't bite my spoon though.
Anybody looking for a lakefront house. The neighbor, Jimmy, is selling his other house. Steve bought his, on the right, from Jimmy early last year.

Lake Gaston is on the NC/VA border off I-95.
The lake looked much muddier than normal from the pics?

Yes it was. It was also higher than it was last year when I was there.
