Algonkian, 5-8-10

Patrick and I put in my two yaks at Algonkian shortly before 7 AM this morning. The weatehr was perfect....

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0976-1.jpg

.... but we know that was going to change mid morning.

As well, Charlie and Thai were in one boat and Simon, Andrew and others were on their yaks. We never saw them as they got there much earlier.

Patrick decided to go upstream and I worked downstream. Earlier in the week, Jack had reported some dead fish in the Algonkian area. I did see this guy.....

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0977.jpg

....a 2-3 pounder! I did not see any other dead fish. The carp were highly active making many jump/splashes but for me, the fishing was slow.

I did manage to hook in to a decent fish at the mouth of Sugarland Run on a Sabile jointed suspending hard swim bait but as I was fighting it, the front  came through and I had to horse the fish in or drift into some trees. The fish got off and I took a splash as the 30-40 MPH winds roared down the river. The wind went from 8-10 to 30+ in a matter of a second!

I got a call from Patrick that he was safely back on the ramp and I told him that I would make my way back against the wind. Eighteen minutes later I was back with a good cardio workout!

Patrick caught 3 fish and he has a picture. No clue as to how the others did hopefully, they will report.

Re: Algonkian, 5-8-10

I got there at 6AM and all seemed well. Wind was light and the current didn't look that bad. got on the water around 6:30 and headed upstream with our buddy Ryan.  He missed one on a small paddle tail bait and then simon caught up to us. Ryan caught two dinks back to back with a shallow crank bait so we went to go join him.

At this point the wind hadn't picked up yet but it soon would!

I caught two on a shallow crank but they were tiny.

Didn't even know I had a fish on. I thought I snagged some grass. Missed a couple on a jig and missed another on a magic shad.

Simon caught two on a magic shad with this being the biggest at 15"

Simon and I were on the water till noon. Ryan left early cuz the wind and waves were ridiculous.  These were the worst conditions I've ever fished in a kayak. We had to anchor down to get any fishing down and even then, we were limited to what we could throw because the current was so fast...

Here's a video of how the water was.

Re: Algonkian, 5-8-10

Glad to see you guys got out there and had some success. I really thought hard about coming, but decided to bow to the wind gods. Spent the day in the back yard with 2 kayaks Trophy Fishing. Turned out to be a great day, gazebo is spotless, flower box is weed free and ready for begonias, and patio furniture is spotless on a clean deck. Hope you do this trip again soon, hopfully I'll be there.

OH... did I mention, I did as well on trophy Stripers today as my previous two trips, and saved a lot of gasoline.

Almost forgot, Ernie that was some great name dropping... "Sabile jointed suspending hard swim bait". Jimmy Houston and the guys from BRHS couldn't have done it better.

Glad you earned some "points" and saved some money. I bet there were not too many people fishing today!

Yep...I was going to name the rod as well as the line but I figured it would be overkill.

But I erred...it was a Lucky Craft Live Pointer 95 MR Suspending...cool looking bait....expensive too but it was given to me.

Re: Algonkian, 5-8-10

Thai and I were on the water by 6 30 am and headed for Goose Creek where we got 5 min of rain, but that was it for the day.  We did not have as much success there as I would have exspected.  We fished a rockpile by lansdowne resort that usually is not under water, but was and had no luck.  We then floated a few stretches where I have cought fish before and that is where we had the most success.  Thai had success on a black and blue jig and I had success on a green tube.  The wind realy started to pick up and was splashing us, but this is when my tube was triggered the best.  I ended up with 4 and Thai had 3.  I lost 2 by the boat and one felt like it had some size.  It wasnt great fishing, but for the conditions with a cold front coming in it wasnt a bad day.  I am planning on going out tomorow afternoon to find them.
   The water was pretty high.

Thai and his biggest fish of the day and first smallie on a jig.

My biggest smallie of the day, which fought real well.

The white caps...this  was before they got to their worst...

Notice in the picture that there aren't any boats out....fewest boats I've ever seen at Algonkian on a Saturday.

Re: Algonkian, 5-8-10

I met up with Ernie at about 615 and we loaded the kayaks and headed over to Algonkian, but not without the mandatory detour (or two). We got to the launch, unloaded the gear and made our way out. I went north. Ernie went South. I paddled for about 20 minutes to get to the end of the island that you can see off to the left from the launch ramp. I saw some minnows fleeing and tossed a jig in there. Felt the tap, set the hook and landed this little chunk.

http://i325.photobucket.com/albums/k385/cozuf2001/Potomac_Smallie_050810.jpg

I ended up with a couple of more before I put the "ocean kayak" to the test. I was literally surfing 1-2's with heavy whitecaps on my way back to the launch. It was fun and scary all at the same time.

Thanks for the loaner Ernie!
