I met Carl at his house at 5am this morning. The original plan was to drive to Annapolis to fish Weems Creek. Carl said that it is still pretty early to be fishing for white perch in the shallow creeks that we fished last summer (Wicomico, Weems/Spa, and at Solomons). He found a report from late May 2008 that made him realize that we aren't all THAT early for shallow white perch at Wicomico. He decided to let me choose whether I wanted to fish at Annapolis or Wicomico. I honestly didn't care so I chose the Wicomico. I really like it because I prefer the isolation it provides when compared to Annapolis.

We made the obligatory stop at the Chaptico Deli to buy bread pudding but we got on the water around 7:30am. The water temperature was 68-69 degrees.

Our first stop was at a boat dock. We fished it for a few minutes and BANG! White perch!



I think the best word to describe Carl's attitude would be "giddy." This is Carl's thing. Shallow water, ultra light tackle white perch fishing. It's fine and dandy to catch 300 of them on bottom rigs with worms like we did last week at Fletcher's but THIS....THIS is the way to catch white perch. Within about 20 minutes we had 6 fish in the cooler.

Next stop: an outlet from a small pond that creates a drain and some current that attracts white perch and stripers.

We made a few other stops at points with rocks or trees and continued to catch fish. Carl caught one big perch that looked like he was either sick with a big sore or some sort of injury. We let him go; the rest were decent sized but nothing big although we didn't catch the tiny ones that we've been catching at Fletcher's either. We stopped at "Bikini Beach" (which is a story for another person(s) to tell) and picked up a couple more perch before we headed back to the pond outlet, hoping the changing tide would attract more fish. We anchored in the current and managed a few more fish before deciding to call it a day. It was hot and Carl has been ignoring the doctor's orders to stay out of the sun so we thought it would be best to head home before the sun got any more intense.

It was a great day. The weather was fantastic. The wind was blowing just enough in the right direction so I barely had to use the trolling motor to make nice, slow drifts by our targets. It was just one of those days when the conditions were just PERFECT for fishing. Best of all, today proved that the WP are in fact moving up shallow. That means that we have an early start to a whole summer of shallow white perch fishing.

We weren't very optimistic of our chances at the beginning of the day but I guess you just never know if the fish are there until someone goes and checks!
