Fletcher's Perchin' 4/30/2010

After some careful planning and driving (involving me backing down the road to Fletcher's because of the rush hour traffic pattern on Canal Rd.) Carl, Mo, Matt, and I met around 7am to do some white perch fishing. I had to be off the water early so Matt and I parked at Fletcher's and Carl and Mo picked us up with the boat.

Matt is the brother of my college roommate that I have known since middle school. He is in town for the weekend and wanted to fish. Two weeks ago we caught shad/herring at Fletcher's from shore. Since Carl called and asked me to fish for WP in the same area I figured Carl would be the best person to show Matt what "perch jerking" is all about.

Of course I was given the unforgiving task of finding the fish. I stopped by the usual haunts from the past few perch trips but we couldn't manage to get into any perch. We must have made four or five stops before I was evicted from the Captain's chair to make room for Mo.

Well, it was a damn good thing Mo took over. Apparently I wasn't factoring in wind direction, sunlight, and traffic noise into my spot selections. Mo is much more adept at such calculations and sure enough, the first spot he pulled up to had a BUNCH of white perch. I don't think I've ever caught so many white perch. We started catching little ones today but they gradually got bigger and bigger. We were literally pulling up fish on every drop for about a half hour...and brought up two at a time quite often.

We caught so many perch that we started to run out of worms. Carl ended up putting cut perch on our hooks and sure enough we still caught more perch! I guess perch are aware of the fact that they are delicious!

I caught some big perch off the cut perch. Mo ended up catching a few catfish and stripers. I wish we could have videotaped his reaction when those big catfish pulled on his line. It was priceless. Matt thought it was hilarious!

The bite slowed down soon after the catfish and stripers showed up. So with a full cooler and 80 degree temps we decided to call it a day.

Here are some pictures from today:

All in all we must have caught nearly 300 fish including white perch, one crappie, a few stripers (all Mo), a few cats (all Mo), and a rock bass!

Carl, thanks for having us along. Matt had a great time. I think we got him excited to try catching white perch on ultra light tackle this summer.

what a great day it was.  everone always forget the traffic noise in their calculation of the honey holes.  On one occasion the catfish almost pulled me in and thanks to Carls big muscles, he was able to catch me.  Next is introducing matt to the white perch on the ultra light tackle.  As always I enjoyed my company.
Can't wait for the white perch to arrive in the shallows.

Great report Dan and outstanding job guys....always teaching the young ones!   wink

Mo definitely has the touch....    cool

BTW, is Carl's fishing pole heavy enough for the perch? That rod could handle a 70 lb blue cat!  roll

I could not ask for a better crew. How often do you get two captains with such extensive experience? My only concern was with Mo. Every time we would catch multiple fish, at the same time, he would find it necessary to remind us of his extensive experience in developing a formula for success! Since he is our resident chiropractor, I wondered who we could get to help him after he hurt his shoulder while patting himself on the back!
