4-24-10, Cedar slabs on a fly...

I fished behind my house this morning using a 4wt fly rod. I actually caught a bass that was bigger than 6" as well as the usual little ones. But that's not the story line here. The blue gills were hungry and they were slabs!

I used a super secret fly that works incredibly well. It's a spider like imitation that sinks very slowly. I would get hit in less that a second each time I made a cast. I would be exaggerating if I said I caught one on every cast but how many casts does one have to make to catch 25+ blue gills in an hour?

Here are some shots of the take....

They wear all that size...never caught a little one!

Beautiful colors!

The secret flu? Here is how it looks up close. ...

...and here it is next to a quarter?

If you want one simply to to Wal-Mart and go find them. They come in black or yellow bodies. I think they are made by Betts. I usually buy a dozen when I make a visit.

Tip- if you are using a light tippet, make sure that you check it because BGs have a row of very fine teeth (needles) on the upper lip and they will fray the line.

I may have to do this again this afternoon. If anyone that does not have a fly rod (or the right gear) ever want to get into this action, let me know and we can set up a time to get it done!

Went back out at 2PM and caught a few more on several different flies. Didn't catch as many but  they were bigger....big brutes. The bite shut off when the clouds got darker and the wind picked up.

I have got to get my grandson over to your lake sometime.  Do they also take worms - his best thing?

Just let me know ahead of time and yep on the worms but twelve year old Brett Bailey nails them on pieces of hot dog!

Same as the rod....4 wt.

I use 3-4-5 weights for blue gills and 6-7-8 weight for bass....always match the line weight to the rod. Some guys over or under line but I stick to the numbers.

oh, I just didn't know what rod you use and "what line weight..." sounds better than "what weight rod..." to me...haha.

Great looking fish. Ernie, I was going to come around and talk with you but I had to go. Nice to see great catches by everyone out there.
