I have wanted to fish with Dave Shindler, owner of JST Fishin' Guide Service, for a while and Bob Forbes and I got to do it today. Dave had posted (on Facebook) that he had a last minute cancellation for today so we jumped on it. He then emailed me back and said the river was still high, the water was still too chilly and that we could change the day for another one later in the month. Both Bob and I decided that we wanted to fish so we told Dave to expect us at 8 AM....we wanted to fish!
It was about 50 degrees when we put in.....
....and motored to our 1st spot. While this looked good, we did not land any fish although we had 2 bites.
Dave then went out to the main stem and we drifted while throwing spinner baits (he made me do it too). It did not take long for Bob to hook up and get into a fight.......
......with this nice and fat 19 inch smallie!
Lots of power plants on this river!
While I am washing lures, Bob hooks up again, this time on a walleye!
And then another one (along with several more smallies)....
While Bob caught fish, I practiced my casting. I was really doing well dropping my baits where Dave wanted me to. So well, that on a blind, sideways cast I managed to get snagged on this RR spike....
What was it doing there? Bob didn't care as he hooked in to this nice FAT 16 incher....
These fish are big up here in PA...I may need to go back a few more times.
Dave and Bob were now mocking me.......
.....but I finally managed my 1st smallie.....
and walleye.....
For the day, I caught 4 smallies and 1 walleye, Dave caught 3-4 smallies (he did not fish much) and Bob caught 6 smallies and 3 walleye. Most of teh fish were caught on spinnerbaits except that i caught 1 smallie and 1 walleye on a fat tube. I also threw a case fluke for a bit of teh day to no avail.
I HIGHLY recommend Dave Shindler if you ever want to fish the Susky. He worked hard to make a decent day out of tough conditions. Bob and I put the pressure on by wanting to fish a fast river and Dave did a nice job on getting us some nice chances. I will be back!!
I love them red eyes!

Awesome! Where did you launch?

No clue.....we just punched it in to the GPS and somehow got there! Dave is going to join the Forum later, he can tell us. It was near York I think.

ahhh, cool. I've always wanted to fish the Susky. My grandparents live near the Juniata River which flows into the Susquehanna above Harrisburg. Everytime we go to visit them I have to drive along miles of both rivers knowing that they are full of chunky smallmouth. I've only fished the Juniata once in all the times I've visited them.

Thanks for the kind words. Ernie and Bob were both great sports and pretty darn good fisherman. Ernie finally took that banana out of his pocket and started catching some fish around lunch time. He was hitting his spots and just didn't get bit for a long time, but pulled it out in the ninth inning... well 8th and 9th.
The area that we fished was below the York Haven Dam. I had found a pod of BIG fish the night before (which never bit this day) so I decided to fish this section.
Great times anyway and thanks for inviting me to the forum.
Dave
