A 4:30 PM on 3/17, it was 48 degrees in the cove.
The thermometer is about 10 feet out and 2 feet deep. If you are fishing Cedar, it is right behing my house under a cork bobber. Feel free to look at the temp (and report it) and then throw it back out.

Any water temp measurements today? I was out at a local lake and Mudkart decided to measure the water temps in a shallow cove and it read in the mid to high 50's! Was it a glitch with his equipment or did today's heat really do that much to the shallows? The area is very similiar to the shallow cove in front of your house Ernie.

I read the thermometer today and it showed between 50 and 51.
I also landed a solid bluegill in Beech. Where are all the Crappie?

53 F surface temp on the Potomac at the entrance of Little Hunting Creek and 57 surface temp at L. Mercer. The surface temps are reasonably accurate, I've checked this device (Smartcast sonar thing from Humminbird) against two thermometers at home. The difference is the thermometer setup on Cedar is 2 feet deep versus my surface readings: I've read claims that the differences between surface and sub-surface readings can be up to 10-15 degrees F. The sub-surface temps are obviously the more relevant ones for a bass, or any other fish.

Ya I walked around the entire lake while fishing and then checked it when I got around to your side.

Bass should start clearing beds any day now!
on the subject, and certainly aside from curly:
i worked with a guy who had a place on the shenandoah river.
one year he finds a nice 4 plus smallie sitting on a bed along a creekmouth.
over 2 days of multiple hours, he finally torments the fish into striking.
he kills it, and pays to have it mounted as a testimonial to his prowess as an angler.
i hope the big sows can get on and off of their beds before the unenlightened types figure out what the deal is

A spawning bass can be caught and released without issue to the spawning process. This is a subject of vast debate, but is supported by scientific findings. As long as we all continue to support catch and release fishing, this won't be an issue.

If I see a bass on the bed, I usually leave it alone. If I catch one that is getting ready to spawn I handle her with extreme care.
Too many of us throw our fish back......when we should be more careful with the release.

i like ernie's comments.
i do tend to give the dinks a toss back into the drink. i need to change
i am thinking about bending down all my barbs again.
i have also decided to leave the scale behind, forego the photos ( just when i finally got a camera in my truck )
better to let them go quickly, for my peace of mind.
on the bedding bass topic, my view was disgust for those who catch those fish and kill them-- like not release.
the catch and release of bedding bass is something i personally dont get much pleasure from, but i don't condemn those who do either.

You're going to have to deal w/ Curly.,...he likes pictures!
Actually, many of the folks on the Forum like pictures. Taking a few won't hurt them especially pictures of fish with unusual markings.

That's what Patrick reported at Alder. I may try to walk Cedar on Monday to take a look.
