Very interesting.  After making the drive on the MD side, I can see the opposition to a bridge.  Unfortunate situation.

Re: Well this doesn't suck (White's Ferry)!

Statement from White’s Ferry Following 10/16 Public Hearing

STERLING, Va. (October 23, 2023) -  To encourage the re-opening of White’s Ferry, ferry owners Chuck and Stacy Kuhn worked closely with Maryland, Virginia, Montgomery, and Loudoun Counties, and previous ferry owner Herb Brown to once again make an offer to purchase the Virginia landing site from Rockland Farm in an effort to get the ferry reopened for its nearly 1,100 daily users. The newest offer is now for $1.25 million for the 1.4 acres, an increase from the last offer in January of $1.1 million. Both offers are well above the land value.

Other options also recently proposed by the Kuhns as ways to get the ferry opened as soon as possible, include:

· Selling the ferry directly to Rockland Farms or to Montgomery County or the state of Maryland.

· Donating the ferry, the ferry business, and the Maryland landing to the county if Rockland Farm would donate the Virginia landing.

It’s unclear whether Rockland Farm owners will accept the new offer, buy the ferry, or consider donating their land as the Kuhns have suggested. Or whether the local jurisdictions will purchase the ferry.

The Kuhns remain committed to getting the ferry open to the local community as quickly as possible and await an answer.

Between that and Edwards ramp being closed, it is a real pain to get to an alternative launch to Algonkian when the water gets low.  They both have quick access to good spots as well.

"It's a public service.”

If the ferry is a public service then why isn't Maryland or Virginia stepping in to resolve this conflict for the public?

Re: Well this doesn't suck (White's Ferry)!

UPDATE: Kuhn's offer to donate White’s Ferry to Montgomery County to enhance the odds of the Ferry reopening and serving the community.

“Our donation will be the best way forward. This is not what we had originally envisioned, but we recognize the importance of White’s Ferry to our region. With this donation, we believe that Montgomery County will be able to work with Virginia to get the ferry moving again,” said Kuhn.

Re: Well this doesn't suck (White's Ferry)!

I heard this on WTOP earlier this morning.  Only problem is the VA side owned by Rockland Farm.  If Rockland turned down an offer of $1.25 million, it makes me hard to believe they'll donate the 1.4 acres for the cause

Maybe give them naming rights: White's Ferry at Rockland Farm!

Another thought is Montgomery county will pursued Loudon county to claim the private property for public use (eminent domain) on the condition that suitable compensation is provided to its owner.  Suitable compensation would most likely not be anywhere close to what the owners of the Ferry are currently offering for the 1.4 acres of land.  Property owners are rarely successful in stopping the government from taking their property under eminent domain.

This will take some time but will be just compensation for Rockland Farm's greed

After a $1.6B tax and fee hike that just passed in MD, they should be flush with cash!

I hope it works out.

I'm not sure they are flushed with cash.

In FY 2024, Maryland's state debt was approximately $32.44 billion.  They just raised taxes and fees on almost everything to their residents and home owners.  At the same time, they're offering programs that pay for college, childcare, medical expenses, energy bills, scholarships, grants, financial assistance programs, family and medical leave initiative, and are planning reparation payments and $$$s to open up White's Ferry.

I have relatives who live in MD that complain to me about it constantly.

My comment was tongue and cheek. MD residents are heavily taxed for sure.

Re: Well this doesn't suck (White's Ferry)!

?  ?  First, let me say ?  ? ? I don't claim any dog in this fight, but like everyone else I have an opinion.

?  ?  For history's sake I think the ferry should be open, it operated for a long time. The thing is, after 4.5 years, life is and has been going on without White's Ferry. The average daily usage was between 600 - 800 vehicles, with more on weekends.

?  ?  I've only crossed it three times, a Saturday trip with family to check it out and a round trip one day for a job in Leesburg. Return trip on a snowy day resulted in a head on when my boss refused to drive into a cornfield to dodge the oncoming nutcase. The rest of that job required Legion Bridge and 193/7, a very little difference.

?  ?  Since nothing has changed on the VA side it seems to me the current land owner is just holding out for a windfall. Maybe it's time for everyone to lick their wounds, pull the cables and tell the VA landowner to go pound sand. Three million is a lot for 800 cars a day.

Re: Well this doesn't suck (White's Ferry)!

I want it open, just like the old days. It’s nice that MD put up the money but as Bob said, the VA owner needs to pound sand. Chuck Kuhn did everything he could to make it happen. For him, it was not about the money.

I’ve crossed it many times and some of those were either a boat in tow.
