In the past week I've lost three lures, two of which were new, due to the leader knot slipping. I had a on two different setups I had braid as the main line and one had a floro leader and the other a mono leader. Both were connected with an Albright knot where the braid wrapped around the leader. The leader slipped out leaving the braid wrapping perfectly in place, and the lure and line in the water

I was wonder what knot do you all use to tie your leaders? How do you prevent from something like this happeneing? This braid / leader business is all knew to me. I know it's been a hit topic since braid came out, and I could read all day online, but there is a sense of community when asking real people on a great forum such a this and getting responses

I use a double uni knot exclusively for tying my leaders. Some people think this is a tricky one to tie, but I think it's not too bad once you get the hang of it. The key is to get your fingers in the right position as you tie it. Check out some instructional videos on Youtube, and pay close attention to how they position their hands and fingers as they tie. With a bit of practice, you should be able to get one ready in under a minute. I will generally use 5-7 wraps for the braid knot and 3-5 for the leader material. If you find the knot is catching your guides when you cast, use one less wrap and make sure the tag end of your leader is trimmed very close to your knot.

Another important thing to be aware of is matching the proper pound-test leader for each type of line you use. Go too light on the braid and your knot will slice through the leader material. Too heavy of a leader and your line will be more visible and you may lose some of the action on your bait. After a bunch of experimenting, here are some combos I have found the most confidence in:

spinning gear:
12lb braid - 8lb fluorocarbon leader
15lb braid - 10lb flouro
20-30lb braid - 12 lb flouro

for baitcasters:
30-40lb braid - 15lb leader
50lb braid - 17lb flouro
65lb - 20lb (rarely go this heavy though)

One more thing - if the water is heavily stained, don't even bother with it. I generally don't use a leader unless water clarity is > 1ft of visibility. Some folks never even use them at all and do just fine. Do a bunch of experimenting, figure out what works best for you and go with whatever you have confidence in. In my opinion, that's the most important part of fishing - developing confidence in you methods and techniques. The more confidence you have in what you are doing, the better you will be at catching. The knot I have been using is the double/quadruple surgeon's knot. I haven't had any issues with it whatsoever.

I personally never use them at all. It just gives a another point of failure for my styles of fishing. But I do use them for fish that would be lifted into the boat or dragged from the surf. That braid will cut your hand good. The flouro or mono will not.

Blood.....held up with 30lb mono to 30lb braid when I caught my 45+ striper last year.
