Sunday at 2 am I ran to OC to fish for tuna. The weather window was perfect for a small boat and a 48 mile run out to the hot dogs. At daylight we had a bit of chop but we had lines in by 8:30am. First the way back rod goes down and it is screaming. No other lines out yet. Big false albacore landed. Reset and get two more lines out and bang doubles but sadly more false albacore. Then we finally get the 7 lines out and the way back again gets a hit. I take it and it fights very hard for about 25 minutes. Nice yellow fin is gaffed and over the rail.
After being bled out I got this pic of the bloody tuna.
We lost three good fish after that and landed another 6 false albacore. The day went on watching baits skip and no action. One more false albacore just before we packed it up and headed home on very calm seas.
Here is the tuna held by John sorta cleaned up.
Great day to be out.... I mean way out..

I always clean the fish on every saltwater trip it seems. I keep wasabi and soy in my glove compartment. I did the cleaning on the yellow fin and had some very nice slices fresh meat left. We chowed down on them real quick. Never had time for soy or wasabi.
It was sweet and slighly salty. Very good.
I am so hooked on this offshore stuff.
A new a addiction.

When I lived in NY my brother and I would run offshore EVERY week in summer and fall. Drifting for shark at first. Encountered everything from duskys to great whites. You just never know out there. It is amazing and yes, an addiction.
Haven't done it in many years. Are you going to run charters ?

Run offshore charters in my little boat. Not likely. And I refuse to get a bigger boat with the morgage I have on my current one.
Maybe if I move to NC I will get a bigger boat.
I do run shark trips on lower bay.

We learned from a charter guy with a 22' Mako. We started going out ourselves in a 19' Cobia CC then "graduated" to a 20' Aquasport CC. Of course, the run to possible offshore spots from northern NJ for sharks is not near as far as OC. A case of youth being wasted on the young? Perhaps but were were always safety conscious and constantly monitored weather conditions.
Eventually my brother purchased a 25' Aquasport CC. That was WAY better and we were then able to make runs of 40+ miles. One way! Good times...

John, were you using a Bending Branches graphite paddle or did that Aquasport have turbo fins to peddle?
