This was some great advice given by one of the pros on PRAC!
Vary your trolling spread so that you have lines near the surface, in the middle, and (almost) bouncing off the bottom.
Once you catch a fish, adjust the other lines to the depth of the rod that caught the fish (or ideally, match your lure depth with the depth the fish are showing on your fish finder).
The multitude of factors that determine lure depth are:
1) amount of line out
2) diameter of the line
3) height of the rod (& rod holder)
4) boat speed
5) current relative to the direction of boat travel
6) the drag of the lure
