Rain and thunder and even more rain muddied the river to low visibility and drove it up 2 feet in a day. Fishing was bad and many dead carp where floating around. Lots of dead smallie's too. I had not fished there for several years since the last big fish kill and from what I have seen and experienced it has not gotten better. Did get one nice pig on a topwater spook.
Sunday more wind and rain canceled another bleak day of fishing.
So what is killing the smallies on the Susky?

I know that the 'daoh has been having troubles but the last 18 months have been better. Perhaps Josh will weigh in as he is closer to this than I am.
Sorry about the weather but glad you caught a pig.
As always, thanks for your reports!

nice fish mike
the susky, in parts, has aproblem with YOY surviving, but there is still a decent population of bigger fish, though that will dwindle over the coming years and what was once a world class smallie fishery will be no more.
the doah on the other hand, has had several fish kills that seem to affect the adult populations. There are a ton of smallies in the doah, but not very many over 12 or 13 inches, still some nice largemouth swimming around though.
I got a 4 pounder a few weeks back and had a bigger one swipe at my spinnerbait.
the state of our waters is sad indeed though

Obviously on a smaller scale, I haven't gotten out to Goose Creek which feeds into the Potomac because of the high water and murkiness. Last year it was great fighting some quality smallmouth and hooking into a couple of fat largemouth.
Of note, I have not seen any fishkills which is encouraging.
